An approach is provided for creating a mobile virtual network. A virtual network is created to include a plurality of mobile virtual routers. A determination is made whether the virtual network has sufficient resources to satisfy a dynamic virtual network requirement. The size of the virtual network is adjusted based on the determination.

Method and system of forming a mobile virtual network

An approach is provided for creating a single mobile virtual router (MVR) to share pooled resources. A mobile virtual router is formed to utilize resources of multiple routers of a network, wherein the routers include one or more physical routers, one or more virtual routers, one or more other mobile virtual routers, or a combination thereof. The resources of the single mobile virtual router are dynamically partitioned in response to an operational criterion of the network.

An approach is provided for dynamic congestion control among mobile virtual routers. A determination is made whether a congested segment of a network of a plurality of physical routers. A network device receives, via a forwarding path, a sequence of packets, where each of the packets includes a sequence number. The network device extracts the sequence numbers from the sequence of packets, records the extracted sequence numbers, and determines a first number of packets of the sequence of packets that have been dropped on the forwarding path based on the extracted sequence numbers. The network device determines a traffic dropping ratio for the forwarding path based on the first number of the packets of the sequence of packets that have been dropped on the forwarding path.

Bidirectional forwarding detection (BFD) protocol extension for detecting random traffic dropping

An approach is provided for performing fault recovery using composite transport groups (CTGs). A first logical channel is established within a composite transport group, wherein the first logical channel is established over a first link associated with a first service provider to a customer premise equipment (CPE) node configured to transport packets. A second logical channel is established within the composite transport group, wherein the second logical channel is established over a second link associated with a second service provider to an optical node. Packets are received over the first logical channel. Packets are received over the second logical channel if the first logical channel experiences a fault condition, wherein switching to the second logical channel is transparent to the CPE node.

An approach is provided for improving network restoration by enhancing loop free alternative coverage. A loop-free alternate (LFA) procedure is initiated for a failed link of a network including a plurality of nodes. A state of incomplete loop-free alternate coverage for the nodes is determined. A shortest path in the network exclusive of the nodes associated with the failed link is determined. Each node along the determined shortest path is set as an explicit route object to create a bypass label switched path for the network.

A system includes an ingress node, an egress node, and one or more intermediate nodes. A path is formed from the ingress node to the egress node via the one or more intermediate nodes, where the path carries label distribution protocol (LDP) packets of an LDP traffic flow. One of the intermediate nodes detects traffic congestion, modifies one of the LDP packets to include an indicator of the traffic congestion, and sends the modified LDP packet towards the egress node. The egress node receives the modified LDP packet and notifies the ingress node of the traffic congestion in response to identifying the indicator of the traffic congestion within the modified LDP packet.

An approach is provided for establishing label switch paths associated with a new routing node of a label switch network. A new routing node is determined to be activated within a label switch network. Label pair generation logic is employed to generate a path set-up message to establish a pair of label switch paths between the new routing node and an activated routing node of the label switch network. Another path set-up message is repeatedly generated for each of a plurality of activated routing nodes within the label switch network to establish pairs of label switch paths.

System and method for providing co-signaled return label switch paths

An approach is provided for enabling fast network restoration. A node, within a network of multiple protocol label switching (MPLS) nodes, detects a failure condition affecting the node. A micro-loop with a neighboring node of the affected node is detected. A label is determined for a subsequent hop from the neighboring node to break the micro-loop for redirecting of traffic to a destination node in the network, wherein the subsequent hop does not create a loop with respect to the affected node.
