While an engine (A,B,C,D,E) is operating, a control system () processes data for certain engine operating parameters to calculate a quantity of exhaust gas needed to satisfy an exhaust gas recirculation requirement. If a primary EGR control loop () alone can satisfy the calculated quantity of exhaust gas, a secondary EGR control loop () is closed while the primary EGR control loop is controlled to satisfy the calculated quantity. When the processing determines that the primary EGR control loop alone cannot satisfy the calculated quantity, the secondary EGR control loop is open concurrently with the primary EGR control loop and both the primary EGR loop and the secondary EGR loop are controlled to cause the combined flow of exhaust gas through the primary EGR control loop and flow of exhaust gas through the secondary EGR control loop to satisfy the calculated quantity.

Emission control system for an engine having a two-stage turbocharger

A flow including air and exhaust gas is received at a boost pressure at a plurality of cylinders (). Exhaust gas is expelled from a first subset of the plurality of cylinders () into a first divided exhaust manifold (). Exhaust gas is expelled from a second subset of the plurality of cylinders into a second divided exhaust manifold (). The first subset and the second subset are different. An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system receives at an EGR inlet (orand) a part of the exhaust gas from the first divided exhaust manifold () and a part of the exhaust gas from the second divided exhaust manifold ().

A unit fuel injector, the injector internally preparing fuel during an injection event at a pressure sufficient for injection by means of an intensifier driven by a pressurized non-fuel actuating fluid selectively ported to the intensifier, includes a selectively actuatable controller interposed in a fuel passage, the fuel passage effecting fluid communication between an intensifier fuel chamber and a needle valve, the controller being shiftable between an open and a closed disposition for selectively opening and closing the fuel passage during the injection event A control apparatus and a method of injection timing control are further included.

Fuel injector with controlled high pressure fuel passage

A hydraulically actuated, intensified fuel injector includes a controller achieving a desired injection control strategy by selectively independently porting actuating fluid to and venting actuating fluid from an intensifier piston to control the compressive stroke of the intensifier piston and selectively independently porting actuating fluid to and venting actuating fluid from a needle valve to control the opening and closing of the needle valve during the injection event. A method of control is further included.

Fuel injector with dual control valve

In an internal combustion engine, a fixed engine valve timing profile may be combined with a variable profile produced by a valve actuator coupled to one or more engine valves. By controlling one or more engine valves independent of the fixed timing profile, engine gas flow may be more flexibly regulated, thereby optimizing engine performance under a wide variety of operating conditions. In one embodiment, enhanced internal exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) may be achieved. A turbocharger may be used, along with the control provided by the valve actuator, to further control engine gas flow. In this manner, the present invention facilitates greater control of engine gas flow with minimal cost and complexity.

Method and apparatus for flexibly regulating internal combustion engine valve flow

A control apparatus for a unit fuel injector, the injector internally preparing fuel during an injection event at a pressure sufficient for injection into an internal combustion engine by means of an intensifier piston includes a selectively actuatable controller being in fluid communication with a source of pressurized actuating fluid and being in fluid communication with a substantially ambient actuating fluid reservoir, the controller having a first valve for selectively independently porting actuating fluid to and venting actuating fluid from the intensifier piston and a second valve for selectively independently porting actuating fluid to and venting actuating fluid from a needle valve during the injection event for controlling opening and closing of the needle valve. The control apparatus may also control an engine intake/exhaust valve. An engine valve actuator and methods of control are further included.

A mechanical oscillator for attenuating pressure waves formed in a rail having a volume of fluid therein includes a rigid enclosed fluid cavity having a selected volume, the volume communicating with the rail actuating fluid though an orifice having a select volume for containing actuating fluid, the orifice having an aperture in fluid communication with the actuating fluid selected such that when an pressure wave impinges on the aperture of the orifice, the motion of the actuating fluid in the volume of the orifice is set to vibrating, the vibrating acting to excite the actuating fluid within the enclosed volume, a resulting amplified motion of the actuating fluid in the orifice, due to phase cancellation between the actuating fluid in the volume of the orifice and the actuating fluid volume in the enclosed cavity, causing energy absorption of the pressure wave due to frictional drag in and around the orifice. An pressure wave attenuator and a method of attenuation are also included.

Pressure wave attenuator for a rail

A hydraulically-actuated unit fuel injector of the intensifier type is provided with two independently operable active control valves. A selectively actuable fuel pressure control valve is disposed on the hydraulic actuation fluid side to control the fuel pressure actuation process and provide a window of injection opportunity wherein the fuel pressure is maintained at high pressure. A selectively actuable timing control valve is disposed on the high pressure fuel side to provide precise control of injection timing events and duration, such as start of injection, end of injection, timing of interruption and duration of interruption, which all may occur during a single injection event within the window of opportunity. Both control valves are independently controlled to prevent reverse motion of the intensifier piston and plunger during dwell or interruption of injection while maintaining the full injection pressure. Dwell or interruption is controlled by using the timing control valve to port fuel under pressure to a fuel injector needle valve surface to generate a force on the fuel injector needle valve surface acting to close the fuel injector needle valve. Methods of defining a fuel injection event fuel injector having a fuel pressure intensifier, includes the steps of (a) preparing fuel pressure with a fuel injection pressure control valve, and (b) controlling the timing of a fuel injection event with a fuel injection timing control valve, the fuel pressure preparation and the timing of the fuel inject event being independently controllable. Preferably, full intensified fuel pressure is made available to the injector throughout a single injection event which may include a pilot injection, a main injection, a rate-shaped injection, and dwell periods wherein no injection occurs. Various methods of operating the fuel injector to provide various functions during a single injection event are also disclosed.

Fuel injector with direct needle valve control

A fuel injector includes a spool control valve, a plunger which moves in a fuel pressure chamber between retracted and full stroke positions. The fuel injector may include a spill port for spilling fuel from the fuel pressure chamber, the spill port being open at the start and closed by the translating motion of the plunger to delay the start of injection. The fuel injector chamber may further include a control port which is closed at the start of plunger motion and is opened by the plunger to connect the pressure chamber to a needle back chamber to bias the needle valve closed. The needle back chamber becomes isolated from the pressure chamber by further movement of the plunger and includes a pressure control passage to allow the pressure therein to decay upon control port closure, thereby effecting split injection or rate shaping.

A hydraulic control device which may be used in a number of applications, including with a fuel injector, includes a control valve having a first and a second independently shiftable valve member, the control member being configurable to define a plurality of actuating fluid flow paths for controlling hydraulic flow therethrough. A fuel injector includes the aforementioned control valve. A method of hydraulic control includes a number of steps, including independently controlling the shifting of two valves in a control valve assembly to selectively control the flow of actuating fluid to an actuator.

Double-acting two-stage hydraulic control device

A connector assembly and the actuating system including the connector assembly, the connector assembly for fluidly coupling an actuating fluid rail to a fuel injector, the actuating fluid rail conveying a quantity of actuating fluid, the fuel injector having an actuating fluid inlet, the connector assembly includes a check valve operably disposed in a connecting member for controlling the flow of actuating fluid between the actuating fluid rail and the fuel injector. The connecting member has a fluid passageway defined therein, the fluid passageway being in fluid communication with the actuating fluid rail and the fuel injector actuating fluid inlet. A method of minimizing negative pressure effects caused by operation of a fuel injector on the actuating fluid in an actuating fluid rail and a method of providing a high pressure actuating fluid flow from a high pressure pump to a plurality of fuel injectors of a diesel engine are further included.
