A device for irradiation of small particles, such as grains from cereals and like crops, for analysis of the quality of the particles, comprises a sample-feeding carrier (), which has sample holders and is adapted to take up particle samples (), which each comprise at least one particle, in the sample holders and transport the particle samples () to a place for irradiation (). The device further comprises a radiating device () emitting electromagnetic radiation for irradiation of the particle samples (), and radiation guides (). The radiation guides () are attached on the sample-feeding carrier () for guiding the radiation emitted by the radiating device () to a particle sample () in a sample holder, when the particle sample () has been fed to the place for irradiation ().

A method for recording images of small particles to detect cracking includes feeding particle samples to a place for image recording, illumination a particle sample from at least two directions simultaneously, the illumination occurring with different light wavelengths for each direction, recording partial images of the illuminated particle in different channels, which are sensitive to different wavelengths, and comparing the different partial images to analyze the particle sample. Each partial image shows the particle sample illuminated from one direction by the channel recording only one of the different light wavelengths.

A method and device for optical measuring of small particles for analysis of the quality of the particles. A sample-feeding carrier is adapted to take up particle samples in sample holders and transport the particle samples to a place for optical measurement. A mirror-supporting means follows the movement of the carrier and has mirrors matching the sample holders. A device illuminates a particle sample when positioned for optical measurement and a detector, which is sensitive to electromagnetic radiation, records a result of optical measurement of the illuminated particle sample. A mirror reflects the particle sample, so that a mirror image thereof stands essentially still seen from the detector, when a measurement is being recorded, owing to the fact that the mirror image of the particle sample falls on a center axis of the movement of the mirror-supporting means.

An instrument adapted to make assessments in sensory evaluation comprises two wafers which are separated by spacers and are provided on their opposing faces with conductive patterns. Upon use, the instrument is connected to a computer which activates one conductor at a time on one side of the instrument and senses if one or more of the conductors on the other side of the instrument are activated, i.e. if a person is exerting a pressure, for example by a finger, at some point or other on the instrument. The special design of the conductive patterns makes it possible to convert the analog position of the pressure into a digital signal which is fed directly into the computer.
