Process for the continuous production of chlorine dioxide comprising generating chlorine dioxide in an aqueous reaction medium in a reaction vessel () maintained at sub-atmospheric pressure, bringing gaseous chlorine dioxide from said reaction vessel to an absorption tower () and contacting it therein with a flow of water to form an aqueous solution containing chlorine dioxide, bringing said aqueous solution containing chlorine dioxide to a stripper (), blowing a gas through said aqueous solution of chlorine dioxide in the stripper to strip off from 10 to 100% of the chlorine dioxide entering the stripper and form a gaseous chlorine dioxide product.
