An apparatus and method for registering a position of a component of a press is disclosed. The press having a plurality of components that can rotate about a central longitudinal axis, such as a main drive shaft and press cylinders, at least one of these components being assigned at least one position registering device, which registers the angular position of the respective component. The, or each, position registering device is formed as a magnetic rotary encoder.

In the drive for cylinders of a rotary press which operate together, one of the cylinders includes a pair of cylinder segments which can be driven and rotated independently of one another by respective electric motors. The further cylinder is driven by a dedicated electric motor.

A low-oscillation and space-saving drive for a changeable format folder of a rotary printing is provided, the rotary printing machine having rotating subassemblies that can be driven, in particular a cutting cylinder, a pin folding blade cylinder, a folding jaw cylinder, a gripper folding blade cylinder, and perforating cylinders belonging to a perforating device. The drive is split up into individual subsystems, and each subsystem is assigned a controlled-position drive motor. In the event of failure of a drive motor, the drive continues to operate without functional impairment.

A printing machine driven by one electric motor or by individual electric motors controllable by their own respective associated control systems. The control systems contain a subsystem observer or a total system observer, which obtains from the actual rotational angle speed (.omega..sub.ist) or the actual rotational angle (.phi..sub.ist) as well as from the electric-current or moment target value or actual value of the electric motor, an observed load torque (M.sub.LAST), which is supplied to the adjustment element as a component of the target moment (M.sub.soll). This signal can be applied via a differentiating filter or, in addition, via the proportional element, to the summing point. Alternatively to or in conjunction with the observer, a periodic compensation controller is provided in the control loop. The periodic compensation controller provides deviation-control for periodic disturbances and obtains, from the differential angular speed (.omega..sub.D), a component (M.sub.2soll) of the target load moment (M.sub.soll). To improve signal quality, filters can be used.

A cylinder for a printing press is adjusted away from a printing stock web or an adjacent cylinder by rotation of an eccentric element. The change in position caused by the movement of the eccentric element is compensated by an additional rotating movement superposed on the rotating movement of the cylinder such that the outer surface of the cylinder has no relative velocity relative to the adjacent cylinder or the printing stock web. Compensation is carried out by a regulating circuit to which is supplied the actual rotational angle of the cylinder with respect to the eccentric element and the actual rotational angle of the eccentric element with respect to the side wall or an angular function derived therefrom.
