Potato plants and tubers that express a pokeweed antiviral protein and are thereby rendered resistant to infection by at least one of PVX and PVY and a method therefore are disclosed. A variant DNA sequence for the spring leaf form of pokeweed antiviral protein is also disclosed.

Virus resistant potato plants

An isolated DNA sequence which codes for a luteo replicase gene is disclosed herein. A method for providing resistance to infection by a virus by expressing a replicase gene in plants is also disclosed, as are transgenic plants containing the replicase gene.

Plants resistant to infection by luteoviruses

An isolated DNA sequence which codes for a potyvirus replicase gene is disclosed herein. A method for providing resistance to infection by a virus by expressing a replicase gene in plants is also disclosed. Transgenic potato plants and tubers containing the replicase gene are also disclosed.

Virus resistant plants

A DNA sequence encoding a PVX replicase gene obtained from ORF1 of a PVX genome is provided. A plant gene containing the PVX replicase coding region is also provided as is a truncated derivative of the PVX replicase gene. A PVX replicase gene is inserted into a plant to confer resistance to the plant against PVX infection when the PVX replicase gene is sufficiently expressed.

Plants resistant to infection by PVX

An isolated DNA sequence which codes for a potyvirus protease gene is disclosed herein. A method for providing resistance to infection by a virus by expressing a protease gene in plants is also disclosed. Transgenic potato plants and tubers containing the protease gene are also disclosed.

Virus resistant plants transformed with a PVY protease gene

An isolated DNA sequence which codes for a PLRV replicase gene is disclosed herein. A method for providing resistance to infection by a virus by expressing a replicase gene in plants is also disclosed, as are transgenic potato plants and tubers containing the replicase gene.

Plants resistant to infection by PLRV

A DNA sequence encoding a potato leafroll virus coat protein having at least one internal translation initiation codon in a different reading frame than the native PLRV coat protein DNA sequence altered to a non-initiator codon is provided. Two translation initiation sites at the start of a 17kd open reading frame in a different reading frame than the native PLRV coat protein DNA sequence are preferably altered A stronger stop codon is also provided in the modified PLRV DNA sequence. The modified DNA sequence having the internal translation initiation codons at the start of the 17kd open reading frame altered to non-initiator codons can be used in a gene to transform plants of the Solanaceae family to obtain transgenic plants resistant to PLRV. A synthetic modified potato leafroll virus DNA sequence is also provided which has the changes in the translation initiation sites and is further made to be more 'plant-like'. Multiple copies of the modified or synthetic modified PLRV coat protein DNA sequence driven by different promoters have also been transformed into potato with advantageous results. The modified potato leafroll virus DNA sequences of this invention are particularly useful in obtaining transgenic potato plants resistant to infection by potato leafroll virus

Virus resistant plants and method therefore

Transgenic plants are disclosed which are resistant to virus infection by Potato Virus X and Potato Virus Y. Plant genes and transformation vectors are also disclosed. Potato plants, for example, Russet Burbank variety, are made resistant to dual infection by Potato Virus X and Potato Virus Y by transforming the plant to express the coat proteins of the two viruses.
