A primary battery includes a cathode having a non-stoichiometric metal oxide including transition metals Ni, Mn, Co, or a combination of metal atoms, an alkali metal, and hydrogen; an anode; a separator between the cathode and the anode; and an alkaline electrolyte.

Primary alkaline battery

An improved electrolyte for a cell having an anode comprising magnesium or magnesium alloy. The cell's cathode may desirably include iron disulfide (FeS) as cathode active material. The improved electrolyte comprises a magnesium salt, preferably magnesium perchlorate dissolved in an organic solvent which preferably includes acetonitrile or mixture of tetrahydrofuran and propylene carbonate. The electrolyte includes an additive to retard the buildup of deleterious passivation coating on the magnesium anode surface, thereby enhancing cell performance. Such additive may preferably include 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF), lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF), or aluminum chloride (AlCl).

Magnesium cell with improved electrolyte

A primary cell having an anode comprising lithium and a cathode comprising a metal doped iron sulfide and carbon particles. A cathode slurry is prepared comprising the metal doped iron sulfide powder, carbon, binder, and a liquid solvent. The mixture is coated onto a conductive substrate and solvent evaporated leaving a dry cathode coating on the substrate. The anode and cathode can be spirally wound with separator therebetween and inserted into the cell casing with electrolyte then added.

The cathode of an alkaline battery can include an electrically conductive additive to increase the cathode efficiency. The additive can include a barium salt and an electrically conductive material. The electrically conductive material can be coated on a surface of the barium salt. The electrically conductive material can be an electrically conductive metal oxide.

Cathode material for battery

Batteries are disclosed. In some embodiments, a battery has a cathode that includes CuMOX, where M is a metal, X includes one or more halides and/or nitrate, x+y is from about 6.8 to about 7.2, and z and t are selected so that the copper in CuMOXhas a formal oxidation state of +2 or greater.

Battery cathode

A lithiated manganese dioxide for use in primary lithium electrochemical cells. The lithiated manganese dioxide is prepared by stepwise treatment with a liquid source of lithium cations that can include an aqueous solution of a lithium base or a low melting point lithium salt resulting in formation of a lithiated manganese dioxide product. Lithium cations in the lithium base or molten lithium salt can be ion-exchanged with hydrogen ions in the manganese dioxide crystal lattice and additional lithium ions reductively inserted into the lattice during subsequent heat-treatment to form the lithiated manganese dioxide product Li,MnO,. The primary lithium cell utilizing the lithiated manganese dioxide product as active cathode material exhibits increased operating voltage and enhanced high rate, low temperature, and pulse discharge performance compared with untreated manganese dioxide.
