Illumination assemblies, components, and related methods are described. An illumination assembly can include at least one solid state light-emitting device, and at least one light guide including a light homogenization region configured to receive light emitted by the solid state light-emitting device and including a light output boundary. The light homogenization region substantially uniformly distributes light outputted over the light output boundary. A wavelength converting material can be disposed within at least a portion of the light homogenization region. In some assemblies, a light extraction region can be configured to receive light from the light output boundary of the light homogenization region, and can have a length along which received light propagates and an emission surface through which light is emitted. The light extraction region can include a wavelength converting material disposed within at least a portion of the light extraction region.

Illumination assemblies, components, and related methods are described. An illumination assembly can include at least one solid state light-emitting device, an emission surface through which light is emitted, and a wavelength converting material that wavelength converts at least some light emitted by the solid state light-emitting device. The wavelength converting material can have a first density per unit area of the emission surface at a first location and a second density per unit area of the emission surface at a second location, wherein the second density is substantially different from the first density, and wherein the density per unit area is defined with a 1&#xd7;1 cmaveraging area. Another illumination assembly can include a light guide configured to receive light emitted by a solid state light-emitting device. The light guide can have a length along which received light propagates and an emission surface substantially parallel to the length of the light guide and through which light is emitted. A wavelength converting material can have a density per unit area of the emission surface that substantially increases along the length of the light guide.

Light emitting devices including wavelength converting material

Light-emitting devices (e.g., LEDs) and methods associated with such devices are provided. In some embodiments, the device includes a distribution of light-generating portions (including active regions) that are spatially localized and separated (e.g., horizontally or vertically) from one or more patterned light extraction portions. This arrangement can allow light generated by the device to propagate and pass through regions of low absorption (e.g., light-extraction portions) rather than in regions of high absorption (e.g., light-generating portions), which can enhance light emission.

Spatial localization of light-generating portions in LEDs

Light-emitting devices can include a package that supports one or more light-emitting die (e.g., light-emitting diode die, laser diode die) and which can ensure mechanically stability, can facilitate electrical and/or thermal coupling with light-emitting die, and can manipulate the manner by which light generated by the die is emitted out of the light-emitting device. The package can also facilitate the integration of the light-emitting devices in various components and systems. For example, suitable packages may facilitate the use of light-emitting devices in components and systems such as light-emitting panel assemblies, LCD back lighting, general lighting, decorative or display lighting, automotive lighting, and other types of lighting components and systems.

Light-emitting devices and related systems

Illumination systems, which include at least one light source (e.g., LED and/or laser diode), light sensor, and a power source are described. In certain embodiments, a light sensor and a microprocessor are used to detect light emitted by a light source and to adjust the power signal provided to the light source at least partially based on the detected light. Some embodiments may enable the color point and/or brightness of the emitted light to be controlled at least partially based on the detected light. The illumination systems may be designed to be used as a liquid crystal display (LCD), general lighting apparatus, or any other illumination device.

LED color management and display systems

Devices, such as light-emitting devices (e.g., LEDs), and methods associated with such devices are provided. A light-emitting device may include an interface through which emitted light passes therethrough. The interface having a dielectric function that varies spatially according to a pattern, wherein the pattern is arranged to provide light emission that has a substantially isotropic emission pattern and is more collimated than a Lambertian distribution of light.

According to various embodiments and aspects of the present invention, there is provided a dynamically tunable thin film interference coating including one or more layers with thermo-optically tunable refractive index. Tunable layers within thin film interference coatings enable a new family of thin film active devices for the filtering, control, modulation of light. Active thin film structures can be used directly or integrated into a variety of photonic subsystems to make tunable lasers, tunable add-drop filters for fiber optic telecommunications, tunable polarizers, tunable dispersion compensation filters, and many other devices.

An optical instrument including: a thermo-optically tunable, thin film, free-space interference filter having a tunable passband which functions as a wavelength selector, the filter including a sequence of alternating layers of amorphous silicon and a dielectric material deposited one on top of the other and forming a Fabry-Perot cavity structure having: a first multi-layer thin film interference structure forming a first mirror; a thin-film spacer layer deposited on top of the first multi-layer interference structure, the thin-film spacer layer made of amorphous silicon; and a second multi-layer thin film interference structure deposited on top of the thin-film spacer layer and forming a second mirror; a lens for coupling an optical beam into the filter; an optical detector for receiving the optical beam after the optical beam has interacted with the interference filter; and circuitry for heating the thermo-optically tunable interference filter to control a location of the passband.
