A LiDAR system and a method for operation thereof are provided. The LiDAR system comprises: a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) light source configured to produce an FMCW signal; and an amplitude modulator configured to modulate an amplitude of at least a portion of the FMCW signal, thereby producing an Amplitude-Frequency-Modulated-Continuous-Wave (AFMCW) signal; a splitter configured to split one of the FMCW signal and the AFMCW signal into a first portion and a second portion, the first portion being an output signal for reflecting off the object, thereby producing a reflected signal, and the second portion being a reference signal for amplifying the reflected signal; and a detector configured to amplify the reflected signal based on the reference signal as a function of a distance from the LiDAR system to an object, thereby generating an amplified reflected signal for determining the distance to the object.

LiDAR detection methods and systems

A LIDAR system for detecting objects comprising: a radiation source for emitting output beams; a scanner for directing output beams onto a field of view (FOV), and a controller. The scanner comprises: a scanning face having reflective zones with reflective surfaces. Each reflective surface can receive the output beams and transmit as spread beams along a spread axis to define a region of interest (ROI) within the FOV. At least two different reflective surfaces can generate different ROIs with different spread axes. The controller is configured to cause relative movement between the output beams and the scanner for selective contact of the output beams with a given reflective zone to emit a given output beam as a desired region of interest.

LiDAR systems and methods

The disclosed systems, and methods are directed to determining distance to an in-use object from a LiDAR system, the systems and methods comprising: acquiring a series of discrete digital values representative of an optical return pulse, accessing, a pre-populated library stored in a memory for retrieving a resolution parameter, the accessing including: determining, similarity parameters between (i) the series of discrete values and (ii) respective ones of the list of template pulse profiles, a given similarity parameter being determined between (i) the series of discrete values and (i) a respective template pulse profile from the list of template pulse profiles; retrieving, from the library, at least the respective resolution parameter of the template pulse profile having a highest similarity parameter; and using, the respective resolution parameter for determining the distance of the in-use object from the LiDAR system.

LiDAR systems and methods determining distance to object from LiDAR system

An optical system and method for controlling the system, and a self-driving vehicle connected thereto. The optical system includes a housing; a first light source configured to emit light in a first wavelength band; a second light source configured to emit light in a second wavelength band different from the first wavelength band; a dichroic element configured for combining light from the first light source and the second light source into an output light beam to be scanned over a field of view; a scanning unit configured to direct output beam outwardly from the optical system, the scanning unit being disposed in the housing; a controller communicatively coupled with the scanning unit; and at least one sensor communicatively coupled with the controller and configured to sense light reflected off surrounding objects into the optical system.
