The invention relates to composites made of an elastic carrier medium comprising polynorbornene (PNR) and magnetisable particles which are polarized reversibly in a magnetic field. Thus the mechanical properties, such as e.g. storage modulus G' (describes the elastic behavior or the energy storage) and loss modulus G&#x2033; (describes the viscous behavior or the energy dissipation), of such elastomer composites can be increased rapidly and reversibly within wide limits (up to approx. two orders of magnitude) as a function of an external magnetic field. Wide-ranging application possibilities are produced herefrom, e.g. for adaptive damping systems, in which the damping force can be adjusted via the strength of the magnetic field.

A rubber compound is described containing as a reinforcing filler a layered silicate which is obtained by excessive leaching of a smectitic layered silicate with mineral acids. The rubber compound further contains at least one diene polymer or copolymer and a coupler containing groups reactive with the filler. There is also described a method for production of the rubber compound and molded articles produced from the rubber compound.

A sulfur-vulcanizable rubber mixture for a tire tread includes at least one terpolymer with a conjugated diene, an aromatic vinyl compound, and a monoolefin monomer. At least one phenolic component selected from the group consisting of a phenolic resin and a precursor mixture, containing phenol and aldehyde, for a phenolic resin is also present. A reinforcing agent in the form of finely divided silica or a mixture of finely divided silica and carbon black is also added.
