A withdrawing device for a press that outputs an elongated workpiece in a direction has a first guide extending in the direction and carrying a first carriage movable by a first motor. A second guide extending in the direction on the first carriage carries a second carriage displaceable in the direction on the second guide by a second motor. The workpiece is clamped to the second carriage. A controller is connected to the first and second motors for shifting the second carriage in the direction at a speed independent of a speed of the first carriage while the first carriage is moving in the direction.

Pressing residue and shell are stripped from a metal-extruder disk having a pair of parallel and flat end faces at least one of which carries pressing residue or shell and an annular outer periphery extending between the end faces and carrying shell. First the disk and a blade are relatively displaced such that the blade sweeps across one of the faces and scrapes any press residue or shell therefrom. Then the disk is rotated about an axis perpendicular to the end faces while a plurality of angularly offset rollers are pressed radially against the shell carried on the outer periphery while the disk is rotating to radially deform the shell and separate it from the outer periphery. The shell separated from the outer periphery is then transported away from the disk.

To achieve the precise arrival of a carrying part at the required positions, despite the very high translatory or swivelling speed of the loading apparatus, it comprises a base translatory part, which is movable transversely to the press axis on a base guide, or a base swivelling part, which is swivellable in a plane transverse to the press axis about a base bearing, and a secondary translatory or swivelling part which is equipped with the carrying part and is movable on the base translatory or swivelling part. The translatory travel of the base translatory part or the swivelling angle of the base swivelling part, on the one hand, and the translatory travel of the secondary translatory part or the swivelling angle of the secondary swivelling part on the base translatory or swivelling part, on the other hand, correspond in each case to one of the travel or angular dimensions between the charging position and the intermediate station and between the intermediate station and the press axis. A loading shell is carried by a movable arm so that a billet to be extruded can be brought from a loading station (furnace) into line with the extrusion axis, between a billet container and a die, extrusion stem or die stem. A pusher which pushes the billet into the container is mounted, together with its displacement drive, on the carrying arm. The pusher is in the form of a carriage which is equipped with an extension and is movable along guide rails parallel to the extrusion axis. The guide rails are connected to form part of the loading shell, which part is equipped with bearings for a drive wheel, a deflection wheel and a tension wheel of a chain drive. The chain drive comprises a driving chain which is connected to the carriage and which has a width amounting to 3 to 9 times the pitch. When reversibly driven, the chain drive moves the carriage between a starting position in which its extension is outside the billet path and an end position in which the extension is flush with the container-side of the loading shell. Half of the loading shell (containing the guide rails or a lower billet support) is swivellable for lateral opening on bringing out the loading shell.
