An electric shaver has a lighting module for providing an optical heating function at a skin-contacting surface of the shaving unit and controller for controlling a dual-phase heating for accelerated warming of a skin contacting surface by increasing an average optical power density for an initial time duration.

In a hair styling device () having a two-dimensional array () of elements to bring hair at a styling temperature, the elements produce optical radiation energy. The elements may include one or more LEDs, and preferably a plurality of LEDs, in which case the LEDS are driven in clusters that may be of mutually different shapes and sizes. The hair styling device () further comprises sensors to obtain an areal light absorption measurement opposed to the two-dimensional array of elements, and a control unit for individually controlling the elements in dependence of the measurement. The sensors may be arranged for measuring an areal light density profile of a whole treatment area. The hair styling device may radiate hair from two sides, both of which includes an areal light absorption measurement. The sensors may include LEDs that do not produce light.

A shaving unit and/or electric shaver having a lighting module for providing an optical heating function at a skin-contacting surface of the shaving unit is disclosed. An encapsulation arrangement for components of the lighting module using a potting material is described. The potting material encapsulates, on both an upper and lower side, a carrier to one or more lighting elements are mounted.

A device for measuring hair properties has a first part (I) and a second part (II) between which hair (H) is guided. The first part includes a measuring probe (MP), and the second part is arranged for deforming the hair against the measuring probe. While the device moves along the hair, the measuring probe experiences both a friction force resulting from the hair being guided along the measuring probe, and a deformation force resulting from hair deformation by the second part against the measuring probe. The second part includes a pressure element (PB, S) for pressing the hair against the measuring probe. In alternative embodiments, the second part comprises alignment elements (AE) at opposite sides of the measuring probe, and guidance elements (G) for mitigating an influence of an angle at which the device is applied to the hair to the friction force and/or the deformation force.

A hair styling device comprises a heating contact surface (HP) for applying heat to hair; a temperature sensor (TS) for sensing a hair temperature; and a control circuit to control a heating of the heating contact surface (HP) in such a manner that a first temperature setting that applies when hair is wet, does not exceed a threshold temperature, the threshold temperature not exceeding 120&#xb0; C., while a second temperature setting of at least 140&#xb0; C. applies when the hair is not wet.
