An apparatus includes a first solid electrode on a substrate, a polyelectrolyte layer over a part of the first solid electrode, a second solid electrode on a portion of the polyelectrolyte layer, and an anchoring layer on the part of the first solid electrode. The polyelectrolyte layer is either chemically bonded to the anchoring layer or has a thickness of less than about 20 nanometers.

Programmable polyelectrolyte electrical switches

In one embodiment of the invention, a method of fabricating a SAM device comprises the steps of: (a) providing a substrate having a top surface and a first metal electrode disposed on the top surface, (b) annealing the first metal electrode, (c) forming a SAM layer on a major surface of the first electrode, the SAM layer having a free surface such that the SAM is disposed between the free surface and the major surface of the first electrode, and (d) forming a second metal electrode on the free surface of the molecular layer. Forming step (d) includes the step of (d1) depositing the second metal electrode in at least two distinct depositions separated by an interruption period of time when essentially no deposition of the second metal takes place. SAM FETs fabricated using this method are also described.

Method of making to small devices having self-assembled organic layers

Apparatus including flexible line extending along a length. Flexible line includes first charge carrier-transporting body, photosensitive body over first charge carrier-transporting body, and second charge carrier-transporting body over photosensitive body. Each of first and second charge carrier-transporting bodies and photosensitive body extend along at least part of length of flexible line. Photosensitive body is capable of near-infrared or visible light-induced generation of charge carrier pairs. Second charge carrier-transporting body is at least semi-transparent to near-infrared light or visible light.

Flexible photo-detectors

Apparatus including a substrate and a mechanical switch, the mechanical switch located over the substrate, the mechanical switch including: a first electrical contact over the substrate; a support over the substrate, the support including a region moveable relative to the first electrical contact, the moveable region having a second electrical contact, the second electrical contact located over the first electrical contact; and a self-assembled molecular layer between the substrate and the second electrical contact. Method including placing into operation an apparatus, and applying a coulomb force causing the second electrical contact to move relative to the first electrical contact such that the switch is opened or closed.
