For the continuous drive of a hook of a sewing machine, two drive cams () alternately engage in the back of the hook. During the passing of the upper thread loop, the respective drive cam () on which the thread would get hung up is out of engagement. The hook is situated in a conical hook race guide and is held therein by magnets.

A locking mechanism for a bobbin case () is provided with a locking lever () supported pivotally in the bobbin cover (). The locking lever is pivotal on a shaft (). A hook-shaped end () is formed at the locking lever (), which latches in the sleeve () in the hook and can hold the bobbin case () in the hook ().

A monitoring device () for monitoring the needle thread () on a sewing machine () is provided which includes a regulator spring () with at least one cam switch () being connected thereto in a rotational manner. In case of changing thread tension and/or thread consumption the cam switch () and/or the detection zones () embodied thereat passes through a sensor () with two sensor areas (a, b). Here, not only the presence and absence of the cam switch () can be detected but also a direction of motion and the speed of motion. In this way, two to three additional electric drives can be omitted and thus the controlling expense can be reduced.

The wire holder deflects a progression of the two thread legs of the thread loop () upwards and thus securely holds the upper thread () in a hook chamfer at the hook ().

A device to introduce the upper thread into the eye of the needle ( ) of a sewing machine which includes two guide clips ( ) having two inlet sections ( ) ending in a narrow point. The two guide clips ( ) are generally identical and can spread evenly when encountering the needle. The grasping hook ( ) that lies in a plane in the center of the two guide clips ( ) is always guided exactly centered into the eye ( ) of the needle ( ). In addition, the two guide clips ( ) are mounted for tilting movement about a horizontal axis (B).

A lighting apparatus for a sewing machine having a lamp holder, which retains at least one lamp, is arranged on the underside of the head of a sewing machine, and within the range of the needle bar and the presser foot bar. The lamp is constructed to loop around the needle bar and the presser foot bar over an angular range of more than 180&deg;. The type of lamp used is, preferably, a cold-light-cathode florescent lamp, which radiates little, if any, heat, while emitting a pleasant light.

A sewing machine having an adjustable head module, which has a machine body and a machine housing, along with a support plate for supporting a workpiece, and a support arm. Driving device for driving a looper in a looper system in the support plate, and for a needle bar in the adjustable head module at the end of the support arm is provided. The head module is pivotably mounted on the support arm, and pivotable, or swinging, about a horizontal pivot bearing in a first sewing direction and axially displaceable in a second sewing direction, in which the first and second sewing directions are perpendicular to one another. The head module can be adjusted on the body of the sewing machine in the sewing direction and transversely to the latter in a simple manner and locked into the exactly adjusted, and optimal, position.

An overlock sewing machine wherein a thread which breaks between the shuttle and the looping discs is allowed to bypass the loop stripping device and is advanced by the discs toward and against the cutting edge of a knife provided on one leg of the U-shaped thread guide which confines the looping discs. This prevents the discs from convoluting the broken thread onto the shaft which drives the discs.
