The disclosed invention is a enhancement to the Video Encoder component of the MPEG standard to improve both the efficiency and quality of the video presentation at the display device. The inventions described below pertain to the enhancement of video compression technology. In general, they are compatible with MPEG video standards (as in current art), but represent novel enhancements thereof. The above inventions apply to several transmission media and networks including cable, DSL, wireless, satellite and IP networks. Another category of invention in this disclosure enhances networking performance by recognizing that the transmitted information is video, rather than data. This invention can be scaled to other classes of multimedia data such as speech or audio or images.

Efficient compression and transport of video over a network

A system and method for transmitting and presenting streaming digital information signals that optimizes performance in the context of goodput, throughput, delay, receiver buffer requirements and tolerance to loss and jitter. The method provides ordering packets of information based on a priority associated with each of the packets; managing the flow of the packets into and out of a buffer; adjusting the rate at which the packets are provided to a communication medium; and transmitting and retransmitting the packets as needed.

A system and method for communicating between source and destination transmission and presentation of streaming digital information signals can be uses to optimize performance in the context of the contentions among different dimensions of performance including goodput, throughput, delay, receiver buffer requirements and tolerance to loss and jitter. The system provides ordering segments of information based on a priority associated with each of the segments of the information; managing of flow of the segments into and out of a buffer based on the priority of the segments of information; adjusting a rate at which information is provided to a communication medium; and transmitting the information.

The object-oriented coder discriminates resource allocation between objects and non-objects for video messaging applications over wireless networks. The object-oriented coder executes a rate control algorithm, an unequal error protection algorithm, and an error concealment algorithm. In the rate control algorithm, an iterative feedback rate control scheme is used in which quantization values of object and non-object data are held constant. In the unequal error protection algorithm, the bit stream is partitioned by object macroblocks and non-object macroblocks. In the error concealment algorithm, five bits of QUANT values of each GOB are used for representing location and motion vectors of the object in the next frame, since the quantization value is constant. The five bits are not used for quantization value. The five bits are used for error concealment to avoid bit rate overhead. The object-oriented coder increases encoding delay, but this increase is acceptable in messaging.
