A processing service of a provider network may protect media content from being tampered with when it is transmitted from the provider network/transcoder to untrusted networks (e.g., third-party networks/CDNs) and to a media player. The processing service (e.g., the transcoder) generates a public and a private key. The service uses the private key to digitally sign content portions (e.g., video frames) before distribution to untrusted CDNs. The provider network creates a manifest that includes the public key. To play the media content, the media player obtains a manifest that includes the public key (via a secure/trusted connection with the provider network). The media player may then obtain the media content from an untrusted edge server/CDN and validate it using the public key that was separately obtained from the manifest (to verify the content was not tampered with).

During downloading and decoding of a lower-quality video version of a video segment, an up-switch condition may be detected. An intra-segment up-switch to a higher-quality version of the segment may then be made. In particular, the higher quality version may be downloaded and decoded at least partially concurrently with the lower-quality version, for example using a dual decoder arrangement. A first portion of the lower-quality version may be displayed. The first portion of the lower-quality may extend from a start of the segment to an intermediate position of the segment. At the intermediate position, playing may be switched from the lower-quality version to the higher-quality version. A second portion of the higher-quality version may be displayed. The second portion of the higher-quality version may extend from the intermediate position to an end of the segment.

Intra-segment video upswitching with dual decoding

During download of a first video segment, a buffer empty condition may be detected that interrupts playing of the first video segment. A remaining data size may be determined corresponding to a remaining portion of the first video segment that has not been downloaded when the buffer empty condition occurs. A total data size may be determined corresponding to a second video segment in its entirety, and it may be determined that the remaining data size exceeds the total data size. The download of the first video segment may then be canceled, and the second video segment may be downloaded. A start of a replacement portion of the second video segment may be identified that corresponds to a start of the remaining portion of the first video segment. Playing of the second video segment may be initiated from the start of the replacement portion of the second video segment.

Size comparison-based segment cancellation

Techniques for estimation of bandwidth for transfer of video content in chunked transfer mode are described herein. A number of chunk samples may be collected during video content transmission. For each chunk sample, its respective delivery speed may be compared to its respective encoding bitrate. If the delivery speed is greater than or equal to the encoding bitrate, then the chunk sample may be included in a primary set of chunk samples. The primary set of chunk samples may be clustered into a lower speed cluster and a higher speed cluster. A representative speed, such as an average or weighted average speed, of the delivery speeds of the chunk samples in the lower speed cluster may be determined, and the bandwidth may be estimated based on the representative speed.
