Described are example systems and methods generally directed to systems and methods for a real-time content recommendation service employing active guidance to facilitate efficient and effective recommendations of content to a user. A plurality of characteristic information associated with content items from a corpus of content items can be obtained and used to generate a content graph and a discovery map/decision tree. The discovery maps/decision trees may include content items and/or segments of content items that are arranged and connected in the discovery maps/decision trees based on their associated characteristic information to facilitate guided recommendations of content based on user interactions. The discovery map/decision tree may then be accessed to provide guided recommendations of content.

Example methods may include determining first text representing a phrase spoken in video content, determining that the first text is present in first subtitle data of first video content, determining a first timestamp and a second timestamp associated with the first text in the first subtitle data, determining a first video segment of the first video content corresponding to the first timestamp and the second timestamp, and generating a first video summary for the first video content, the first video summary comprising the first video segment.

Example methods may include determining a first request to resume playback of video content, wherein the first request is associated with a user account, determining, using historical consumption data associated with the user account, a portion of the video content that has been consumed, where the portion of the video content comprises a first video segment and a second video segment, determining that a first video segment ranking of the first video segment satisfies an importance threshold, generating a video recap of the portion of the video content, wherein the video recap comprises the first video segment, and causing presentation of the video recap.
