Polypropylene-coated functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (PP/f-MWNT) comprising functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (f-MWNT) in an amount of from about 0.5 wt. % to about 80 wt. %, based on the total weight of the PP/f-MWNT; and polypropylene (PP) in an amount of from about 20 wt. % to about 99.5 wt. %, based on the total weight of the PP/f-MWNT. A method of making PP/f-MWNT comprising (a) contacting pristine multiwall carbon nanotubes (p-MWNT) with nitric acid to produce f-MWNT; (b) contacting at least a portion of the f-MWNT with a first solvent to form a f-MWNT dispersion; (c) contacting PP with a second solvent to form a PP solution; (d) contacting at least a portion of the f-MWNT dispersion with at least a portion of the PP solution to form a PP and f-MWNT suspension; and (e) drying at least a portion of the PP and f-MWNT suspension to form the PP/f-MWNT.

Polymer coated multiwall carbon nanotubes

Fiber reinforced epoxy resin composites are produced using a specific epoxy resin system. The epoxy resin system contains at least one polyglycidyl ether of a polyphenol. The system also contains a hardener that contains a mixture of aminocyclohexanealkylamine and polyalkylene polyamine hardeners. The ratio of epoxy resin groups to amine hydrogen groups is from 1.05 to 1.50. The epoxy resin system contains a tertiary amine catalyst such as a tertiaryaminophenol, a benzyl tertiary amine or an imidazole compound.

An epoxy thermoset that includes a reaction product of a toughening agent prepared from a reaction of a first epoxy resin and a polyether polyamine, a second epoxy resin and a liquid amine hardener for the toughening agent and the second epoxy resin. The toughening agent is an adduct of the second epoxy resin and the polyether polyamine. The polyether polyamine phase of the toughening agent separates to form particles in the epoxy thermoset, where the particles have a volume average diameter in a range from 20 nanometers to 200 nanometers.

A curable composition including (a) at least one epoxide compound comprising: (i) at least one solid or semi-solid epoxy resin; and (ii) at least one divinylarene dioxide resin compound; and (b) at least one hardener; wherein the curable composition being cured comprises a cured thermoset product having a Tg of greater than about 120&#xb0; C. A thermoset can be prepared from the above curable composition.

A curable flame retardant epoxy resin composition including (a) at least one flame retardant epoxy resin; (b) at least one amphiphilic block copolymer; and (c) a curing agent. Such components are present in the curable composition in the appropriate amounts and ratios such that, upon curing, the block copolymer self-assembles into a nano structure morphology, such as a worm-like micelle morphology. The resulting cured product made from the composition of the present invention has a remarkably increased high fracture resistance; and allows the use of flame retardant epoxies in applications where fracture resistance is an issue.
