A battery includes a metal can having a bottom, a top opening, and four sides. The battery also includes a plurality of cells stacked inside the metal can, wherein at least two opposing sides of the four sides of the metal can are biased inward against the plurality of cells to provide compression.

Battery with compression and prevention of thermal runaway propagation features

A battery system includes a battery cell, a thermally insulating layer, and a thermally conducting layer which includes a fin. The fin pushes against an interior surface of a case which surrounds the battery cell, the thermally insulating layer, and the thermally conducting layer. The thermally conducting layer includes a discontinuity where the discontinuity is configured to reduce a capacitance associated with the thermally conducting layer compared to when the thermally conducting layer does not include the discontinuity.

Capacitance reduction in battery systems

Battery assembly techniques and a corresponding system are disclosed. In various embodiments, the battery assembly techniques include compressing battery cells and inserting the battery cells in a can. Battery cells are stacked and then compressed using pneumatic cylinders that exert pressure on a first external layer of the stacked battery cells. A first portion of the stacked battery cells is released from the pneumatic cylinders while a second portion of the battery cells remains compressed. The first portion of the stacked battery cells is inserted in a can. In various embodiments, friction decreasing materials are added to the stacked battery cells to compress the stacked battery cells or ease insertion.

Battery assembly techniques

This disclosure generally relates to an electric vehicle. More specifically, this disclosure describes a motor control system for an electric vehicle that activates and deactivates a hill hold assist mode and a hill start assist mode for the electric vehicle. The hill hold assist mode is used to help ensure the electric vehicle remains stationary while stopped on an uphill incline. Likewise, the hill start assist mode is used to help a rider of the electric vehicle start the electric vehicle moving again once it is stopped on the uphill slope.

Various embodiments of a technique are provided for determining the quality of a weld for a battery contact using audio signals. In some embodiments, a system for determining the quality of a weld for a battery contact comprises a processor configured to receive a snapshot that includes a rendering of an audio signal obtained during a welding process by monitoring a device being welded. A weld-quality indicator for the device being welded is determined based at least in part on features extracted from the snapshot and a weld-quality score for the device being welded is determined in response to the weld-quality indicator. In this case, the weld-quality score is indicative of a quality of the weld. The system also includes a memory coupled to the processor and configured to provide the processor with instructions.
