Systems and methods are provided for correlating alarms throughout a multi-layer network and visualizing alarm clusters in a display of an interactive Graphical User Interface (GUI) to enable a network operator to prioritize urgent network issues. In one embodiment, an interactive GUI includes a main display area configured to display one or more geometrical shapes representing one or more alarm clusters, respectively. Each alarm cluster may represent a potential root-cause event in a network. The interactive GUI also includes one or more interactive objects that, when selected by a user, provide additional information associated with the one or more alarm clusters.

A method for determining the impact on a network of a fault in the network, comprises the steps of constructing a layered topological model of the network according to a predetermined protocol, receiving an indication of an erroneous event at a point in the network, and modelling the impact on the network and its services resulting from the event by navigating the topological model. The modelling step includes applying a priority weighting to an erroneous event to determine a priority order in which a sequence of erroneous events may be attended to. The priority order may be based on cost-effectiveness of carrying out a particular repair. The method may alternatively be used to determine the location of a fault with increased certainty by relating an event with a previous erroneous event. The method is preferably implemented by a programmed computer.

Communications trails on a network can be provisioned by users using a trail manager. In a hierarchically-layered connection-management domain, when a trial ( ) between trial termination points having respective adaptation capabilities is provisioned, client links ( ) within the intersection of those adaptation capabilities are created. Further trails may then be provisioned in channels within those client links. Channel usage information ( ) within the client links is recorded to indicate current channel usage and this information is updated by the trail manager whenever a trial using a channel is added or deleted. In a hierarchically-layered domain, channels within client-links corresponding to different adaptation capabilities, such as different data rates, may overlap and so when channel-usage information in one client link is updated, channel-usage information in other client links is also considered and updated as appropriate.

Trail management in a communications network

In a management system of a communications network comprising a plurality of network elements, capacity and capability of one or more individual network elements is represented by a set of data templates. A first set of data templates represent internal construction and physical resources of a network element. A second set of templates represent connectivity capabilities of the physical resources. The data templates are stored at an element controller, controlling a plurality of network elements. The element controller learns about the capacity and capabilities of the network elements, by receiving a set of reference messages generated by the network elements, over an operations, administration and maintenance channel. The reference messages point to the data templates stored at the element controller thereby enabling efficient enrollment of network elements by transmission of compressed messages over the operations, administration and maintenance channel.

Method and system of providing improved network management data between a plurality of network elements and a management system for increasing a flow and decreasing an amount of data transfer

A trail explorer and method for exploring trails in a communication network is described. The trail explorer is provided in a trail managing system having a trail database for storing connections in the network. The trail explorer compares the connections stored in the database and those actually provisioned in the network. When a connection exists in the network but is missing from the database, the trail explore triggers a learn process. If a connection exists in the database but is missing from the network, it marks the connection and trails using the connection as &ldquo;unprovisioned&rdquo; if they are not already marked so, or delete trails if they are network learned trails.
