A compression ignition (CI) (typically diesel) fuel formulation is provided containing (i) a C4 to C8 dialkyl ether (DAE), (ii) a naphtha fuel component and (iii) a low boiling component selected from low boiling hydrocarbons, ethers and mixtures thereof. The formulation may be produced along with a gasoline fuel formulation, by (1) preparing a gasoline fuel formulation in a manner which yields a naphtha fuel component as a byproduct, and (2) blending at least some of the naphtha byproduct with a C4 to C8 DAE and a low boiling component (iii) so as to produce the CI fuel formulation.

The present invention provides a poly(hydroxycarboxylic acid) amide salt derivative having formula (III): [Y&#x2014;CO[O-A-CO]&#x2014;Z&#x2014;R]pX(III) wherein Y is hydrogen or an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group, A is a divalent optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group, n is from 1 to 100, preferably from 1 to 10, m is from 1 to 4, q is from 1 to 4 and p is an integer such that pq=m, Z is an optionally substituted divalent bridging group which is attached to the carbonyl group through a nitrogen atom, R+ is an ammonium group and Xq&#x2212; is a non-sulphur-containing anion. Furthermore, the present invention provides a lubricating composition and a fuel composition containing the poly(hydroxycarboxylic acid) amide salt derivative and the use of the poly(hydroxycarboxylic acid) amide salt derivative for decreasing the phosphorus volatility of a fluid.

The use of an effective concentration of a hydrocarbyl amine wherein the hydrocarbyl moiety has a number average molecular weight in the range 140 to 255 as an additive in an unleaded gasoline composition is provided containing a major proportion of a gasoline suitable for use in a spark ignition engine, for reducing injector nozzle fouling in a direct injection spark ignition engine. A method of operating a direct injection spark ignition engine is also provided.

Use of a viscosity increasing component (ii) in provided in a composition (i) of a diesel fuel for the purpose of: improving the vehicle tractive effort (VTE) and/or acceleration performance of a compression ignition engine or a vehicle powered by such an engine, into which engine the composition (i) is introduced, or mitigating decrease in the vehicle tractive effort (VTE) and/or acceleration performance, in the case of a diesel fuel composition (i) to which an additional component (iii) is introduced for the purpose of improving the emissions performance, of a compression ignition engine or a vehicle powered by such an engine, into which engine the composition (i) is introduced.
