Electron capture dissociation (ECD) is performed by transmitting an electron beam through a cell along an electron beam axis, generating plasma in the cell by energizing a gas with the electron beam, and transmitting an ion beam through the interaction region along an ion beam axis to produce fragment ions. Generating the plasma forms an interaction region in the cell spaced from and not intersecting the electron beam, and including low-energy electrons effective for ECD. The ion beam axis may be at an angle to and offset from the ion beam axis, such that the electron beam does not intersect the ion beam.

An ion transfer device for transferring ions from a first chamber to a second, reduced-pressure chamber includes a tube and a bore selector. The tube includes a plurality of tube bores. The bore selector is positioned at an inlet end of the tube and includes an inlet port. The tube is movable relative to the bore selector, and/or the bore selector is movable relative to the tube, to align the inlet port with a selected one of the tube bores while blocking the other tube bores. Alignment of the inlet port with the selected tube bore defines an ion transfer path from the first chamber, through the selected tube bore, and to the second chamber. The ion transfer device may be utilized, for example, in an atmospheric-pressure interface of a mass spectrometer.

A sample sprayer includes a first conduit for conducting a liquid sample, a second conduit surrounding the first conduit to define an annular passage for conducting a gas, a sprayer tip in which a fluid interaction region receives the liquid sample and the gas. The sprayer tip is configured to produce a sample spray by contact between the liquid sample and the gas in the fluid interaction region and emit the sample spray from the orifice. An adjustable positioning device is configured to translate the first conduit along the longitudinal axis in response to adjustment of the positioning device, wherein an axial position of the first conduit is adjustable relative to the orifice.

Sample sprayer with adjustable conduit and related methods

An on-axis ion source has an ionization chamber and an adjacent low-pressure region. The on-axis ion source also includes a capillary tube having an axial bore for supporting fluid communication between the ionization chamber and the adjacent low-pressure region, the axial bore of the capillary tube being substantially concentrically aligned with the orifice of a skimmer located downstream in the ion path from the capillary tube. A blocking element is provided in an aligned facing arrangement with the axial bore of the capillary tube and on an opposite side of the orifice relative to the capillary tube. The blocking element receives droplets or particles flowing through the axial bore of the capillary tube and passing through the orifice of the skimmer. The combination of an on-axis arrangement and the use of a blocking element results in improved signal-to-noise level due to enhanced ion transmission and reduction of noise arising from passage of undesolvated droplets and particles to the mass analyzer.

Electrospray ion source

A detector assembly including a support element, a first capacitor plate and a second capacitor plate. The support element is configured to attach the detector assembly to a chamber wall that separates a lower pressure region and a higher pressure region. A surface of the second capacitor plate is spaced apart from a surface of the first capacitor plate to define a capacitor gap. The first capacitor plate is positioned to be inside the lower pressure region when the detector assembly is attached to the chamber wall. The second capacitor plate is supported by the support element through insulating couplings. The detector assembly also includes a means for reducing mechanical load on the insulating couplings between the second capacitor plate and the support element. The reduced mechanical load includes load caused by a pressure difference between the lower and higher pressure regions.

Multipole rod assemblies for guiding or trapping ions in a mass spectrometer. A multipole rod assembly includes a plurality of modules. Each module includes a shield element, one or more insulating elements coupled to the shield element, and one or more multipole rods mounted on the insulating elements, wherein the modules are coupled together to form the multipole rod assembly such that the multipole rods of the modules define an interior volume for guiding or trapping ions.

A capacitor for connecting to components within a vacuum system in which the space between the capacitor plates is at the pressure of the vacuum system is provided. One of the be plates provides a feed-through which permits closer coupling of the capacit or to other circuits the system and also eliminates the need for additional components. The capacitor can be a mounted and thus thermally coupled to a vacuum manifold which provides temperature stabilization.

The invention relates to an ion filter and a method for the production of the ion filter. The ion filter comprises a plurality of elongated solid, rod assemblies. Typically, four rod assemblies, corresponding to four rod electrodes, are utilized. Each rod assembly has a curved rod surface, and at least two abutment surfaces. In one embodiment, the rod is hyperbolic in curvature. These surfaces are formed with one profiled grinding tool simultaneously in such a manner and angle of contact from a processing direction such that no undercuts are formed from this processing direction. The abutment surfaces are shaped such that one abutment surface of one rod assembly can be aligned with another abutment surface of another rod assembly when the rod surfaces are directed toward a longitudinal axis located in the interior of the ion filter. The rod assemblies are electrically insulated from each other with an insulating piece adhesively bonded to each rod assembly.
