A power monitoring and loss prevention system includes actuators installed in lower level components of a primary power system, such as tap boxes of a power busway for an aisle of a data center. The power monitoring and loss prevention system redirects high frequency sampled power flow data to one or more computing devices that determine if power flows in the primary power system are at threshold levels that are likely to cause higher-level circuit breakers of the primary power system to be tripped. If so, the power monitoring and loss prevention causes one or more of the actuators to divert discrete lower level loads that are receiving power from the primary power system to instead receive power from a reserve power system such that power flows in the primary power system that may cause the higher level breakers of the primary power system to trip are avoided.

A power system for multi-input devices with shared reserve power includes a first automatic transfer switch (ATS) and a second ATS each coupled at respective inputs to a primary power system and a reserve power system. An output of one of the ATSs is coupled to first power input of a multi-input electrical device and an output of the other ATS is coupled to a second power input of the multi-input electrical device. When primary power is available, electrical power is fed to both the inputs of the multi-input electrical device and when primary power is not available reserve power is fed to both inputs of the multi-input electrical device. If a component fails between the primary and/or reserve power system and the multi-input electrical device, a full load of the multi-input electrical device is fed from a non-affected one of the inputs of the multi-input electrical device.

A system for performing computing operations in a data center includes one or more sets of computer systems, one or more primary power systems, and a reserve power system. The primary power systems include a downstream portion that supplies power to at least one of the sets of computer systems. The reserve power system includes switches that switch between supplying a primary power feed and a reserve power feed from the reserve power system through part of the primary power system. An input resiliency switch can switch between supplying primary power or reserve power to support power supplied to the sets of computer systems through the primary power system based upon a primary power feed fault. A power distribution switch can switch between supplying primary power and reserve power to part of the downstream portion of the primary power system to bypass an upstream portion of the primary power system.

An external power supply containment unit includes a chassis configured to mount to a structure external to a rack. The external power supply containment unit further includes one or more discrete power supplies mounted in the chassis and one or more electrical connectors that are configured to couple and decouple with a power distribution system of a rack positioned adjacent to the external power supply containment unit. The electrical connectors are configured such that racks of electrical devices, such as computers, can be replaced while the external power supply containment unit remains mounted to the external structure. Additionally, discrete power supply units included in the external power supply containment unit may be re-used to provide power to electrical devices included in a replacement rack when a rack of electrical devices coupled with the external power supply containment unit is replaced.

Externally-mounted power supply containment unit

A modular uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provides modular uninterruptible power support to multiple rack computer systems. The modular UPS can include one or more rectifier, battery, and inverter modules installed in one or more rack frames. The modules can be installed in a common rack frame and electrically coupled via a bus bar coupled to the frame. The modules can be installed in separate rack frames and electrically coupled via a bus bar extending between the separate rack frames. The modular UPS can include multiple sets of rectifier modules and battery modules which are electrically coupled to the rack computer systems in parallel and can provide uninterruptible power support subsequent to at least one module failure. The rectifier, battery, and inverter modules installed in the rack frames can be adjusted to provide scalable power support based at least in part upon the power support requirements of the rack computer systems.

A power distribution system that distributes power to electrical loads includes a switchgear apparatus that selectively routes power from one of two or more feeds to downstream portions of the system based upon commands received from a separate external switchgear controller device that receives data from various portions of the power distribution system. The switchgear controller device can operate in one or more separate operating modes, where commands to the switchgear apparatus are generated based upon user inputs or determinations made by an internal switchgear control module based at least in part upon the selected operating mode of the switchgear controller device. The operating mode can be set based upon user interaction with an operating mode interface. The switchgear control module may generate switchgear operation commands based at least in part upon data received from the switchgear apparatus and various portions of the power distribution system.

Techniques are described for managing power in a computing system using power controller(s). Power consumption information may be received from power sensors that measure power consumption of computing devices in a rack computing system, or that measure the power received or distributed by power distribution components such as power distribution units (PDUs) in the racks. A determination may be made whether the amount of power being currently consumed within a computing system exceeds a predetermined threshold. If so, control signal(s) may be sent to instruct the power controller(s) to alter characteristic(s), such as frequency, voltage, current, and so forth, of the power being supplied to one or more computing devices or other component(s). The power alteration may occur at one or more points in the power distribution system of one or more racks, such as at one or more PDUs, distribution circuits, breakers, and so forth.

Power management for devices

A power routing rack can be used to provide various power support redundancies to one or more computing racks in a data center. Power feeds are supplied to bus bars in a power bus bar array extending through the rack, and power routing assemblies positioned in the rack route power from one or more of the bus bars to a computing rack. Each assembly includes circuit breakers that couple to separate bus bars and a routing module that routes power from one or more of the circuit breakers to one or more computing racks. The routing module can include a transfer switch that selectively routes power. The routing module can include an electrical bridge that concurrently routes power. Each assembly can be positioned within the rack to couple the circuit breakers to various power bus bars to adjust the power support redundancy provided to one or more computing racks.

A switchgear controller device that generates commands to a switchgear apparatus that selectively routes power from one of two or more feeds to an electrical load of a power distribution system based upon the commands includes a user interface that displays graphical representations of various portions of the power distribution system. The switchgear controller device can receive data from components included in respective upstream portions and downstream portions of the power distribution system and generates graphical representations of present configurations of the components based at least in part upon the received data. Graphical representations of components included in the downstream portion of the system may be non-interactive, and graphical representations of components included in the upstream portion may be interactive based at least in part upon the present operating mode of the switchgear controller device.
