A lubricant reservoir for a vapor transport type rigid magnetic disk drive lubricant system includes a metal heat sink that presents a finned surface at the side exposed to the outside environment. A second surface within the sealed head-disk enclosure cooperates with a thermal heat transfer resisting wall portion to form a duct. A lubricant reservoir is retained against the heat sink surface within the duct. The reservoir assembly is secured to the head-disk enclosure wall by mounting tape that not only seals the enclosure, but thermally isolates the reservoir assembly from the enclosure wall. The reservoir assembly is further positioned adjacent the disk assembly of the drive such that disk rotation induces an air flow through the reservoir duct and in contact with the lubricant reservoir to effect vapor transport between said reservoir and disks to maintain a proper molecular layer of lubricant on the disk surfaces which are always maintained at a temperature greater than the reservoir during disk drive operation.

A structure and organization for a magnetic disk drive provides for optimizing the volumetric storage density within a device form factor by optimizing the number of disks. The spindle and dual rotary actuators are respectively supported at each side by a pair of support plates that are separated and supported by not only the spindle and actuator shafts, but also the voice coil motor core pieces and tie plates which carry shock mounts. This head-disk assembly is shock mounted in the lower part of a two part enclosure wherein the enclosure parts are aligned and separated by elastomer guides and the separation covered by a compliant tape to complete the enclosure. Both actuators use a common servo surface while one actuator carries upwardly facing transducers and the other downwardly facing transducers so that each arm extending between disks mounts, but a single suspension-transducer assembly to reduce interdisk spacing. The enclosure occupies the entire vertical height of the form factor and the head-disk assembly occupies the full available height of the enclosure interior to accommodate as many disks as possible. Electrical components are excluded from the axial sides of the stack of disks.

The magnetic disk drive chemical breather filter of the present invention affords protection with respect to chemical vapors and gases in addition to trapping particulate pollutants. The chemical filter as described, protects against both organic vapors and inorganic gases. In addition particulate filters are interposed between the chemical filters and both the exterior atmosphere and internal atmosphere. The combined filter is isolated from both external and internal atmosphere by extended length diffusion passages. Both difffusion passages are composed of multiple parallel paths to prevent the blockage of any single path from impairing the functioning of the filter. Chambers formed at each side of the combined filter medium and access thereto by the diffusion passages at the center of one chamber and the periphery of the other enables the length of the air passage through the filter medium to be equal irrespective of the portion of the filter through which the air flow passes. Using an activated carbon fabric chemical filter and coplanar multiple diffusion paths, a low profile, low cost filter assembly is achieved. The use of ultrasonic welding of the parts eliminates connector devices and adhesives as sources of contamination.
