An airfoil for a gas turbine engine includes: opposed pressure and suction sidewalls extending between spaced-apart leading and trailing edges, a root, and a tip; and a hollow plenum disposed between the sidewalls. The plenum has a chordwise first dimension at a radially outer end thereof, and a chordwise second dimension at a radially inner end thereof. The second dimension is substantially less than the first dimension.

A method for generating an internal pack coating having different, controlled thicknesses includes partially filling a root opening of a turbine blade having a cavity therein with a first powder and a second powder having different formulations so that the first powder contacts a first predefined portion of the surface of the cavity and the second powder contacts a second predefined portion of the surface of the cavity. The method further includes heating the object with the first powder and the second powder therein to thereby produce a coating of the internal cavity having different coating thicknesses over the first portion of the surface of the cavity and the second portion of the surface of the cavity.

An aluminide coating is produced on a hollow article by furnishing an article having a hollow interior and an access opening to the hollow interior, placing an aluminide coating tape into the hollow interior through the access opening, and vapor phase aluminiding the hollow article using an external aluminum vapor source in addition to the aluminide coating tape.

A turbine nozzle includes outer and inner bands integrally joined to a vane having a three-pass serpentine flow circuit between opposite pressure and suction sidewalls. The outer band includes an inlet for channeling cooling air into a first channel of the circuit located behind a leading edge of the vane. A first outlet is disposed in the inner band at the bottom of the first channel where it joins the second channel of the circuit. A second outlet is also disposed in the inner band at the bottom of a third channel of the circuit which is disposed in flow communication with the second channel. The first channel behind the leading edge is smooth except for corresponding rows of first and second turbulators spaced laterally apart. The first turbulators bridge the pressure and suction sidewalls directly behind the leading edge, and the second turbulators are disposed behind the suction sidewall.

A gas turbine blade to be protected by an aluminide coating is placed within a masking enclosure including an airfoil enclosure that prevents deposition on the airfoil of the gas turbine blade, and a dovetail enclosure that prevents deposition on the dovetail of the gas turbine blade. The assembly is vapor phase aluminided such that aluminum is deposited on an exposed portion of the gas turbine blade that is not within the masking enclosure.

A gas turbine blade which has previously been in service is protected by cleaning the gas turbine blade, and then first depositing a platinum first layer on the airfoil and the platform of the gas turbine blade. Thereafter, a platinum second layer is deposited over the platform but not the airfoil. A platinum-aluminide protective coating is formed by depositing an aluminum-containing layer overlying both the platform and the airfoil and interdiffusing the platinum and the aluminum.
