Optical filters are used to compensate for changes in LED and pcLED performance resulting from technological advances in device design or manufacturing, with for example the filtered optical output from later generation devices matching or substantially matching the optical performance of earlier generation legacy devices. This can allow the advanced generation devices to be substituted in applications previously supported by the legacy devices, even if the optical performance of the unfiltered advanced generation devices does not satisfy the optical performance specifications required by the application. Somewhat paradoxically, the advantages of using the filters in combination with the advanced generation devices may arise from the filters making the optical performance of the devices worse according to one or more figures of merit.

An inorganic coating may be applied to bond optically scattering particles or components. Optically scattering particles bonded via the inorganic coating may form a three dimensional film which can receive a light emission, convert, and emit the light emission with one or more changed properties. The inorganic coating may be deposited using a low-pressure deposition technique such as an atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. Two or more components, such as an LED and a ceramic phosphor layer may be bonded together by depositing an inorganic coating using the ALD technique.

A translucent body's first surface is coupled to a top surface of a light converter. The light converter's bottom surface is coupled to a reflective bottom layer. A light coupling structure includes a hole in the reflective bottom layer and at least a slot in the light converter for receiving a light guide, and a light coupling surface for receiving laser light with a laser peak emission wavelength via the light guide. The light coupling surface is arranged so at least 80% of the laser light passing the light coupling surface is received by the translucent body. The translucent body comprises a second surface which is opposite the first surface and is coupled to a reflective top layer for reflecting at least part of the laser light back to the light converter. A peak emission wavelength of the converted light has a longer wavelength than the laser peak emission wavelength.

A wavelength converting element (), typically for a LED (), is provided, comprising luminescent particles () dispersed in a matrix () comprising crosslinked polysiloxane. Crosslinked polysiloxanes are temperature stable, typically up to temperatures above 300&#xb0; C., meaning that they are stable under normal operating conditions of light emitting diodes. Further, crosslinked polysiloxanes are stable towards exposure to light, meaning that they will not degrade/discolor as a consequence of high intensity light exposure. The polymeric wavelength converter can easily be shaped in different forms. This may lead to better outcoupling of the light from a LED-converter system.
