Because there are currently probably more than necessary different HDR video coding methods appearing, it is expected that practical communicated HDR videos may in several future scenarios consist of a complicated mix of differently encoded HDR video segments, which may be difficult to decode unless one has our presently presented video decoder () arranged to decode a high dynamic range video consisting of temporally successive images, in which the video is composed of successive time segments (S, S) consisting of a number of temporally successive images (I, I) which have pixel colors, which pixel colors in different time segments are defined by having lumas corresponding to pixel luminances according to different electro-optical transfer functions (EOTF), wherein the images in some of the segments are defined according to dynamically changeable electro-optical transfer functions which are transmitted as a separate function for each temporally successive image, and wherein the images in other segments have lumas defined by a fixed electro-optical transfer function, of which the information is co-communicated in data packages (DRAM) which are transmitted less frequently than the image repetition rate, and wherein at least one of said data packages (DRAM) characterizing the electro-optical transfer function of the image pixel lumas after a moment of change (t) between a first and a second segment is transmitted prior to the moment of change (t); and similarly a corresponding encoder which composes the segmented video stream assuring that at least one correct package (DRAM) describing the EOTF according to which the lumas of a later video segment is coded is received by receivers before the change to a different HDR encoding method segment.

System for handling multiple HDR video formats

An HDMI transmitter inserts an additional video line in the video frame to be transmitted via the HDMI interface and inserts auxiliary data related to the video frame in the additional video line. The auxiliary data is related to the video frame and as the auxiliary data is stored in the video frame itself it is transported in a synchronous fashion with the video frame. As the additional video line is in excess to the number of video lines defined by a standard video frame format they are ignored by existing receivers yet available to receivers according to the invention and can be transmitted using the existing HDMI standard.

A digital display interface () connects a first audio-visual device () to a second audio-visual device (). Stereoscopic image data is transmitter over the display interface (). Components of stereoscopic image data are multiplexed and inserted into an image data carrying element. An existing deep color mode can be re-used for this purpose. Signaling information to help identify or decode the stereoscopic image data is carried in auxiliary data carrying elements. Stereoscopic image data can be distributed between image data carrying data elements and auxiliary data carrying data elements. Auxiliary data carrying elements can be transmitted in horizontal or vertical blanking periods, and can comprise HDMI Data Island Packets. Stereoscopic image data can be sent over an auxiliary data channel. The auxiliary data channel can form part of the same cable as is used to carry a primary channel of the display interface, a separate cable, or a wireless link.

Transport of stereoscopic image data over a display interface

The invention relates to a protocol for communications between networked devices. The devices are logically arranged as a hierarchy of device types including a controller device type () from which no other device type depends and a basic device type () from which a number of other device types depend. The devices implement a simple device description message of fixed length and format which includes the device type, and some devices further implement an extended device description message including additional information.

Network establishment and management protocol

The invention relates to a protocol for communications between networked devices. A data processing system comprises a cluster of devices () interconnected for the communication of data in streams, particularly digital audio and/or video data. To enable synchronization of the stream presentations by the destination devices, some or all of the devices () carry respective tables () identifying, for that device, an identifier for each type of data stream that the device can process together with the processing delay for that stream. The or each such table is accessible via the cluster connection () to whichever of the devices, at source, destination or in between for the signal, is handling application of the necessary offsets.

Latency handling for interconnected devices

A local communication system comprises a first cluster () of devices interconnected for the communication of messages via a first data bus () and in accordance with a first set of communication protocols, a second cluster () interconnected via a second data bus () and following the first set of communication protocols; and a data channel () linking a device () of the first cluster () and a device () of the second cluster (). The data channel () suitably comprises an RF link supporting communication of messages in accordance with a second set of communications protocols. Clustered networked devices

A local communication system comprises a plurality of devices interconnected for data communication. One of the devices is a display device arranged to display data from one or more other devices of the system, and one of the devices is a remote control carrying a first group of controls (A . . . G) for controlling respective operational functions of a device of the system. The system is configured to identify a selected device of the system to be controlled by user operation of a remote control device, and to determine which operational functions of that selected device are missing on the remote control. For such functions, the system generates on the display device a user actuatable simulacrum of a control for that function (H, J, K, L).
