Thermo-pneumatic anti-icing systems include port and starboard anti-icing subsystems operatively interconnecting heated engine bleed air discharged from port side and starboard side turboprop engines with port and starboard airfoils, respectively, associated with an aircraft to thereby provide in-flight anti-icing protection to the port and starboard airfoils, and an auxiliary power unit (APU) capable of discharging a supply of heated APU bleed air to the port and starboard anti-icing subsystems during an abnormal single engine or a single pneumatic bleed air operational condition. A controller may command respective port and starboard cross bleed valves to open and thereby allow the APU bleed air to be supplied to the one port or starboard anti-icing subsystem that is incapable of delivering heated engine bleed air from the port side turboprop engine or the starboard side turboprop engine, respectively. The port and starboard airfoils are thus each protected against inflight icing during the abnormal single engine or single pneumatic bleed air operational condition.

Environmental control systems and methods to control environmental temperature of an enclosed space by integrating a passive heat exchange subsystem (e.g., a loop heat pipe (LHP) heat exchange subsystem) having a closed loop heat exchange fluid circuit in heat-exchange relationship with the enclosed space for providing environmental temperature control therewithin, a RAM-air subsystem having a RAM-air circuit for circulating RAM cooling air, and a vapor compression cycle machine (VCM) subsystem having a VCM fluid circuit having a compressor, an evaporator, a condenser and an expansion valve.

Integrated environmental control systems and methods for controlling environmental temperature of an enclosed space

An environmental control system for an aircraft uses engine bleed air for cabin environment control. The environment control system regulates the inlet airflow by assessing a plurality of parameters that provides, but not limited to, the aircraft operating conditions and external environment data, aiming at substantially reducing the extracted engine bleed air demand for cabin environment control and fuel consumption reduction and concurrently complying with aircraft pressurization, ventilation and thermal load requirements. The environmental control system airflow target is calculated based on the actual aircraft operating conditions, external environment data and a multi-dimensional airflow schedule map. Then, environmental control system airflow target is further trimmed based on the actual aircraft operating conditions and air conditioning system performance capabilities by fixing the air conditioning airflow outlet temperature and then regulating the air conditioning inlet mass airflow through the flow control valve. The first control method reduces and the second one trims the environmental control system airflow target comparing to conventional control methods. Thus, fuel consumption reduction is obtained when the environment control system airflow target (extracted bleed air demand) can be reduced and or trimmed depending on flight conditions.
