Methods for determining phase fractions of a downhole fluid via thermal properties of the fluids are provided. In one embodiment, a method includes measuring a temperature of a fluid flowing through a completion string downhole in a well and heating a resistive element of a thermal detector at a position along the completion string downhole in the well by applying power to the resistive element such that heat from the resistive element is transmitted to the fluid flowing by the position. The method also includes determining, via the thermal detector, a flow velocity of the fluid through the completion string and multiple thermal properties of the fluid, and using the determined flow velocity and the multiple thermal properties to determine phase fractions of the fluid. Additional systems, devices, and methods are also disclosed.

Inductive couplers for use in a downhole environment are described. An example inductive coupler for use in a downhole environment includes a body defining a cavity and magnetic material positioned in the cavity. The example inductive coupler also includes a coil adjacent the magnetic material, the coil formed with a number of turns of wire, and a first metal cover coupled to the body to enclose the cavity. The metal cover being electrically coupled to the body to form a substantially contiguous electrically conductive surface surrounding the cavity.

A well instrumentation system, comprising: a power and data supply; and a plurality of functional units attached to the power and data supply and distributed throughout the well, characterised in that the power and data supply comprises first and second substantially identical cables, and in that each unit comprises a first power supply channel and a first data channel connected to the first cable, a second power supply channel and a second data channel connected to the second cable, and a functional module which draws power from the first power supply channel or the second power channel module, and data from the first data channel or the second data channel. The selection of connection of the surface unit to one or other cable is effective to select the corresponding power and data channels in the functional units.
