A communication device capable of communicating over a network on behalf of a consumer device, the network being configured such transport of packets through the network is provided by each communication device in the network listening for and relaying packets, the communication device comprising a relay unit configured to listen for packets and relay them over the network, a mode unit configured to identify whether the consumer device is active or non-active with respect to the network, and a timing unit configured to control the time that the relay unit listens for packets in dependence on that identification.

Mesh relay

A communication device comprising: a first processing function for performing protocol processing of received datagrams; a second processing function for performing protocol processing for received datagrams at a higher level than the first processing function; and a power controller; the device being configured such that the power controller can place the second processing function in a low power state while the first processing function remains capable of performing protocol processing of received datagrams; and the first processing function comprising a mesh datagram processing function configured to process datagrams of a mesh protocol by analyzing received datagrams of the mesh protocol, determining a subset of those datagrams for retransmission, and causing the device to retransmit the determined ones of those datagrams.

Processing mesh communications

A method of determining the proximity of a first device to a second device, the method comprising, at the second device: receiving a first packet having a first payload and a first lifetime value, the first lifetime value being such so as to cause a device receiving the first packet to not retransmit the first payload; and generating, in dependence on the first packet, a second packet having a second payload and a second lifetime value, the second payload being indicative of the proximity of the first device to the second device and the second lifetime value being such as to cause a device receiving the second packet to retransmit the second payload.

Device proximity

A method for providing an update package to a node in a mesh network comprising a set of nodes and a gateway node arranged to provide access to an update server via a second network. The gateway node collects package information from each set node, including a first node. Each package identifies a respective node and its package version. The gateway node may query the update server based on the package information. The update server may respond to the gateway node with an updated package for the first node. The gateway node broadcasts the updated package into the mesh network as a sequence of mesh messages. Each of a first plurality of nodes of the set may forward the mesh messages to other nodes. The first node stores the mesh messages so as the sequence of mesh messages is received, assemble the updated package.

Update management

A network including a plurality of wireless communication devices capable of operating according to a wireless protocol that imposes no common timebase at the network level, the plurality of devices comprising: an initiator device configured to detect an event and in response transmit an event message having a payload comprising a time field; and a set of appliance devices configured to receive and automatically retransmit messages received from others of the devices, each appliance device being associated with an appliance supplementary to its wireless communication function and being configured to, on receiving an event message comprising a time field, cause their respective associated appliance to perform a function at a time indicated by the content of the time field in the received message.

Latency mitigation

A communication device configured to form a cluster with one or more other communication devices in its vicinity, monitor the presence, in the cluster, of those other communication devices and provide information about the presence, in the cluster, of the other communication devices to another device.

Object tracking by establishing a mesh network and transmitting packets

A communication device capable of communicating according to two communication protocols, the device being configured to: in response to receiving a first message according to a first one of the protocols, the first message including data defining a payload, automatically retransmit a second message according to the first protocol, the second message comprising data defining an identical payload to that of the first message; and in response to receiving the first message, automatically transmit a third message according to the second protocol, the second message also comprising data defining an identical payload to the first message.

Linking ad hoc networks

A system and method which identifies locations associated with radio-frequency (RF) signal sources in an area, includes receiving multiple measurement sets from a plurality of collector devices. The collector devices obtain contemporaneous information on characteristics of the signal sources and absolute and/or relative location information of the collectors. These measurement sets are processed to discover positioning data for the RF signal sources that may be used to determine locations of devices in the area that are configured to receive or monitor the RF signals.

Access point location identification methods and apparatus based on absolute and relative harvesting

In a terminalhaving a receiverfor receiving the signals from plural transmission sources-whose positions and transmission time offsets are unknown within the terminal, a method is provided for determining the change in the time (elapsed time) at the terminal between two instants. At a first position of the terminal a first set of measurements, aligned to a first instant, of a signal parameter representative of the time or phase of receipt of said signals from said plural transmission sources relative to one or more of them, or to a reference, or to a terminal clock is obtained. Then at a second position of the terminal a corresponding second set of measurements, aligned to a second instant, of a signal parameter representative of the time or phase of receipt of said signals from said plural transmission sources relative to one or more of them, or to the reference, or to the terminal clock is also obtained. The aligned measurements of the first and second sets are combined, and the time elapsed between the first and second instants is calculated from the change in the combined aligned measurements of the first and second sets.
