Various exemplary embodiments relate to a function selector device in a system using a DisplayPort protocol over a universal serial bus (USB) mechanical interface, including: a first port configured to transmit/receive a USB SSTX signal; a second port configured to transmit/receive a USB SSRX signal; a third port configured to transmit/receive a DisplayPort lane signal; a fourth port configured to transmit/receive a DisplayPort AUX signal; a fifth port configured to transmit/receive a DisplayPort HPD signal; a sixth port configured to connect to SSTX pins of a USB 3.0 receptacle; and a seventh port configured to connect to SSRX pins of a USB 3.0 receptacle.

A system and method for operating an electronic device having a High-Definition Multimedia Interface port that is shared between an HDMI source function and an HDMI sink function of the electronic device utilizes detecting whether an external HDMI device that is attached to the HDMI port is one of an HDMI source and an HDMI sink. If the external HDMI device is detected as being an HDMI source, the HDMI sink function of the electronic device is enabled. If the external HDMI device is detected as being an HDMI sink, the HDMI source function of the electronic device is enabled.

Various exemplary embodiments relate to a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) switch configured to receive notification of a switch from a current HDMI source to a new HDMI source, determine whether the new HDMI source is actively transmitting data, has attempted to access an HDCP register before a predetermined timeout delay since a last HDCP register access, and is transmitting unencrypted data, and based on these determinations, either immediately begin transmission of the HDMI data received from the new source or reset the new HDMI source. In this manner, various exemplary embodiments enable switching between HDMI sources with a reduced delay.
