An invention that relates to streamers is described. These streamers contain one or more streamer sections. These sections can have sensors, channels, and/or analogue arrays of sensors are disposed along its length. At least one of these streamer sections has a variable density of sensors, channels, and/or analogue arrays along the length.

Macro compressed sensing data acquisition

The present disclosure is directed to a MEMS-based rotation sensor for use in seismic data acquisition and sensor units having same. The MEMS-based rotation sensor includes a substrate, an anchor disposed on the substrate and a proof mass coupled to the anchor via a plurality of flexural springs. The proof mass has a first electrode coupled to and extending therefrom. A second electrode is fixed to the substrate, and one of the first and second electrodes is configured to receive an actuation signal, and another of the first and second electrodes is configured to generate an electrical signal having an amplitude corresponding with a degree of angular movement of the first electrode relative to the second electrode. The MEMS-based rotation sensor further includes closed loop circuitry configured to receive the electrical signal and provide the actuation signal. Related methods for using the MEMS-based rotation sensor in seismic data acquisition are also described.

A method includes receiving desired locations of nodes for deployment on a seabed of a seismic survey where each of the nodes includes a sealed housing and, within the sealed housing, at least one battery and spaced seismic sensors electrically powered by the at least one battery; determining locations of the nodes as deployed on the seabed where at least some of the determined locations differ from their corresponding desired locations; acquiring seismic data sensed by the spaced seismic sensors of the nodes where the acquired seismic data corresponds to the determined locations; and, based at least in part on the acquired seismic data, a spacing of the spaced seismic sensors and the desired locations, generating seismic data for the desired locations.

Gradient-based 4D seabed acquisition positioning

Translational data in a first direction is measured by particle motion sensors contained in an elongated housing of a sensor device provided at an earth surface. The particle motion sensors are spaced apart along a second, different direction along a longitudinal axis of the elongated housing. Rotation data around a third direction is computed based at least in part on computing a gradient of the translational data with respect to the second direction.

A technique includes receiving first data acquired by at least a particle motion gradient sensor or a rotation sensor of a streamer that is subject to vibration due to towing of the streamer; and receiving second data acquired by at least one particle motion sensor of the streamer and being indicative of particle motion and vibration noise. The technique includes processing the second data in a processor-based machine to, based at least in part on the first data, attenuate the vibration noise indicated by the second data to generate third data indicative of the particle motion.

A seismic sensor device includes an elongated housing for placement at least partially into an earth surface. A plurality of particle motion sensors are contained in the elongated housing to measure translational data in a first direction, where plural pairs of the particle motion sensors are spaced apart along a second, different direction along a longitudinal axis of the elongated housing. A communication interface communicates the measured translational data to a computer system configured to compute a gradient based on respective differences of the measured translational data of the corresponding plural pairs of the particle motion sensors, and compute one or more of rotation data and divergence data using the gradient.

A technique includes receiving data indicative of a first measurement acquired by a rotation sensor on a seismic streamer and based on the first measurement, estimating a torque noise present in a measurement acquired by a second sensor on the streamer. A tool is described for seismic data collection which may have sensors mounted along its entire length to sample both geophysical signal and noise including at least one of acoustic noise, system noise, and noise resulting from the interaction between the two. Systems and methods for acquiring borehole seismic data are also described. In contrast to conventional systems which attempt to avoid introducing noise into the collected data stream, the present systems include a sufficient type, number, and spacing of sensors to intentionally sample at least one source of noise. The methods include operating a borehole seismic acquisition system to sample both a target signal and at least one source of noise and using a processor with machine-readable instructions for separating the noise from the signal.

Borehole seismic acquisition tools, systems and methods

A marine survey acquisition system. The system may include a vessel for towing a marine survey spread. The marine survey spread may include streamers, marine vibrators and a cable. The cable may be coupled to a respective streamer from among the streamers and one of the marine vibrators. The cable may power the respective streamer and the one of the marine vibrators. The one of the marine vibrators may emit energy at a high frequency range.

Methods and systems for marine survey acquisition

Apparatus and methods for acquiring seismic data using a seabed seismic data cable positioned on a seabed are described, including correcting for the effect of one or more sensor non-linear motions, which improves accuracy of seismic data. One or multiple non-linear movements of the sensor may be corrected for. Rotational motion compensated seismic sensors and methods of use in seismic data acquisition

A technique includes disposing a particle motion sensor on a spread of at least one streamer and using the particle motion sensor to acquire a measurement of a signal, which is transmitted from an acoustic transmitter. The technique includes determining a heading of the particle motion sensor based at least in part on the measurement.

Particle motion sensor-based streamer positioning system

An apparatus includes particle motion sensors and a streamer that contains the particle motion sensors. The streamer is towed in connection with a seismic survey, and the towing of the streamer produces a turbulent flow. The streamer includes an inner cable and a fluid containing layer. The inner cable includes a material to circumscribe and extend along a longitudinal axis of the streamer and circumscribe at least one of the particle motion sensors. The fluid containing layer surrounds the inner cable to reduce noise that is otherwise sensed by the particle motion sensors due to the turbulent flow.

Measurement data is received from first and second seismic sensors, where the first and second seismic sensors are oriented in opposite directions. Each of the first and second seismic sensors has a sensing element responsive to pressure and particle motion. The signals can be combined to remove the particle motion component of the measurement data and obtain pressure-only data. Alternatively, the signals can be combined to deghost the received measurement data.
