There is described an optical fiber coupler generally having: a first optical fiber having a longitudinally extending multimode guiding region and a first taper portion longitudinally extending between first and second locations of the first optical fiber, the first taper portion having a dimension progressively decreasing along a first taper direction from the first location to the second location; a second optical fiber having a longitudinally extending multimode guiding region and a second taper portion longitudinally extending between third and fourth locations of the second optical fiber, the second taper portion having a dimension progressively decreasing along a second taper direction from the third location to the fourth location; and a coupling region where at least a portion of the first taper portion is optically coupled to a portion of the second taper portion, with the first and second taper directions being opposite to one another.

There is described a multi-clad optical fiber for propagating an optical signal having at least a single mode. The multi-clad optical fiber generally has a fiber core, an inner cladding surrounding the fiber core, and at least an outer cladding surrounding the inner cladding, the multi-clad optical fiber having at least a taper portion extending along a longitudinal dimension z, the taper portion having a radial dimension progressively decreasing at a normalized slope exceeding an adiabaticity criterion of a conventional single-clad optical fiber propagating at least the single-mode across its single-mode core.

There is described an optical fiber coupler in which at least one fiber is a multiple-clad fiber, containing a single-mode core supporting a single guiding mode and an inner multi-mode cladding guiding multiple modes. The multiple-clad fiber is fused with a second fiber of a different etendue to create an optical fiber coupler having an enhanced multi-mode signal transmission.

Asymmetric optical fiber coupler

There is described a double-clad fiber coupler (DCFC) composed of two double-clad fibers that have been fused together and tapered. The DCFC allows the propagation of light in the fundamental mode in its single-mode core with very little loss. Back reflected light may be collected two ways: by the core of the double-clad fiber and by the inner cladding of the double-clad fiber.

A tunable laser cavity for selectively emitting laser light having a first wavelength and a second wavelength using pump light emitted by a pump light source. The tunable laser cavity includes an optical resonator, the optical resonator having a configuration, optical properties and dimensions such that a first round-trip time of the laser light having the first wavelength in the optical resonator differs from a second round-trip time of the laser light having the second wavelength in the optical resonator; a gain medium inserted in the optical resonator, the gain medium being responsive to the pump light for converting the pump light to the laser light; a pump light input port optically coupled to the gain medium for receiving the pump light and conveying the pump light to the gain medium; an optical intensity modulator inserted in the optical resonator for absorbing a portion of the laser light as the laser light propagates back and forth in the optical resonator, the optical intensity modulator having a light absorption coefficient that is modulated with a modulation period, the modulation period being selectively adjustable between a first modulation period value and a second modulation period value, the first and second round-trip times being substantially equal to a respective integer multiple of respectively the first and second modulation period values; and an output port for releasing the laser light from the optical resonator.
