A method of controlling an electrowetting element. The method includes receiving first data corresponding with a first voltage with a first magnitude, generating the first voltage and applying the first voltage to the electrowetting element. Second data corresponding with a second voltage with a second magnitude is received. It is determined that the first magnitude is smaller than the second magnitude and, responsive thereto, a third magnitude of a third voltage is determined, the third magnitude larger than the first magnitude and smaller than the second magnitude. The third voltage is generated and applied to the electrowetting element instead of the second voltage, consecutively after the first voltage is applied.

Control of an electrowetting element

A method of controlling an electrowetting element. The method includes receiving first data indicative of a first display effect. Using the first data, a first magnitude of a first voltage is determined. The first voltage with the first magnitude is generated and applied to the electrowetting element. Second data indicative of a second display effect different from the first display effect is received. Using the second data, a second magnitude of a second voltage is determined. The second magnitude is equal to the first magnitude. The second voltage with the second magnitude is generated and applied to the electrowetting element.

A display apparatus includes an electrowetting element including a non-switchable color filter, a first support plate with a surface having a first part overlapped by the non-switchable color filter and a second part not overlapped by the non-switchable color filter, and a first and second fluid. A control apparatus of the display apparatus is operable to switch the first fluid between at least a first configuration with the first fluid in contact with the first part but not substantially in contact with the second part and a second configuration with the first fluid in contact with the second part and with the first fluid being at least one of: not substantially in contact with the first part or at least partly in contact with the first part.

Electrowetting element with non-switchable color filter

An electrowetting display apparatus includes a first substrate including a first electrode that receives a gray-scale voltage and a second electrode insulated from the first electrode and receiving a reference voltage, a second substrate, a fluid layer, and a color filter. The color filter has a first thickness in an area corresponding to the first electrode and a second thickness in an area corresponding to the second electrode, and the first thickness is larger than the second thickness. Accordingly, a cell gap of the electrowetting display apparatus is reduced, and color reproducibility of the electrowetting display apparatus is improved without sacrificing brightness.

Electrowetting display apparatus and method of manufacturing the same

An electrowetting display device includes a picture element having a first support plate and a second support plate. A surface of a second layer of the first support plate is non-planar and has a shape at least partly corresponding with a pattern of a first layer of the first support plate.

Support plate of an electrowetting display

An electrowetting element comprising a first support plate, a second support plate and a first and second fluid located between the first support plate and the second support plate, the second fluid immiscible with the first fluid. The first support plate comprises a wall extending along at least part of a perimeter of the electrowetting element and an electrode comprising a first electrode portion having a first electrode portion area and a second electrode portion having a second electrode portion area larger than the first electrode portion area. The first electrode portion is closer to the second support plate than the second electrode portion. The first electrode comprises a first edge portion and a second edge portion positioned further from an inner surface of a wall in a direction substantially perpendicular to the inner surface of the wall than the first edge portion.

Electrowetting element

An electrowetting element includes a surface having a display area; a first fluid and a second fluid immiscible with the first fluid; and a non-switchable color filter for further determining the display effect. A configuration of the first and second fluids is switchable, using an applied voltage, to determine a size of area that the first and second fluids adjoin the display area, which thereby determines a display effect provided by the electrowetting element. An extent of the non-switchable color filter in a plane parallel to a plane of the display area is smaller than the display area.

An electrowetting element includes a first fluid and a second fluid immiscible with the first fluid, as well as a surface, wherein display effects depend on an extent that the first and second fluids adjoin the surface, in dependence on applied voltage. Operation includes receiving data representing a first display effect for display; receiving data representing a subsequent display effect for display after display of the first display effect; comparing data representing the first display effect with data representing said subsequent display effect to determine a difference indicative of a change of the extent the second fluid adjoins the surface between display of the first display effect and display of the subsequent display effect; and depending on said difference, selectively outputting data for driving the electrowetting element to display a different display effect, instead of the subsequent display effect, consecutively after displaying the first display effect.

Control method

An electrowetting display device has first and second fluids which are immiscible with each other and a first and a second support plate, a surface of the second support plate being located for being adjoined by the second fluid. An electrode which contacts the second fluid forms part of a protrusion and is separated from the surface of the second support plate.

Electrode configurations for an electrowetting display device

An electrowetting display device has a picture element having first and second support plates with a space in between, the space including first and second fluids immiscible with each other, the second fluid being electroconductive or polar. The first support plate includes a wall defining an extent of the picture element. An electric field is applied between an electrode and the second fluid, the electrode having an edge, a low portion and a high portion, the high portion being closer to the second support plate than the low portion, the high portion being arranged adjacent to the wall and having an area smaller than the area of the low portion. The high portion of the electrode has a cut-out causing an increased electric field in the space, and at least part of the edge of the electrode adjacent to the cut-out following the shape of the wall.

Electrowetting display device

An electrowetting display device comprises a plurality of picture elements () having a first support plate () including a surface () and a second support plate. A space () of a picture element between the surface of the first support plate and the second support plate includes at least one first fluid and a second fluid immiscible with each other, the second fluid being electroconductive or polar. The first support plate includes an electrode () for applying an electric field in the picture element. It also includes a layer () arranged on a side of the electrode facing away from said space. The layer forms an electronic component () for applying a voltage to the electrode. The electrode comprises a height difference () corresponding to a thickness of the layer (). The height difference causes an inhomogeneous electric field in the space, providing a preferred direction of motion of the first fluid on application of the electric field.
