A method for correcting aberrations of the eye applied to an ophthalmic instrument operating with an analysis light beam, including: measurement of aberrations of the eye capable of interfering with the analysis beam, correction of the phase of the wave front of the analysis beam as a function of the measured values of the aberrations, measurement of eye movements carried out independently of the measurement of aberrations, and modification of the correction of the phase of the wave front of the analysis beam as a function of the measurement of eye movements.

Toric contact or intraocular lenses having a correcting portion characterized by one or more novel constructions that each produce an optical path that improves angular misalignment tolerance. The lens may be constructed with a &ldquo;smooth atoric&rdquo; aspect where the optical path through the correcting portion of the lens corrects for both astigmatism and an axisymmetric aberration other than astigmatism, there being no sudden surface discontinuity between the regions that provide the different corrections (thus, &ldquo;smooth&rdquo;). In another embodiment, the lens may be constructed with so-called &ldquo;sectors&rdquo; circumferentially arranged around the optical axis such that an optical path through the correcting portion of the lens varies as a function of the angular separation from the reference meridian plane, and the correcting portion is divided into at least two sectors having different astigmatism correction axes. In either embodiment, the correcting surface may be provided on either or both of the anterior or posterior faces of the lens, and the optical performance of the lens in case of angular displacement (the &ldquo;angular misalignment tolerance&rdquo;) is increased. Specifically, the angular misalignment tolerance is increased by at least 30% over a standard toric lens of the same class. Definition of the particular shape of the lens enables a mold die of that shape to be formed, or lens machining tools may be used.

A method of determining the shape of an ophthalmic contact lens for correcting optical aberrations of the eye beyond defocusing or astigmatism includes the steps of measuring the optical aberrations of the eye to be corrected, determining the shape of the rear face of the lens from the measured topography of the cornea in order to obtain a predetermined mechanical behavior of the lens when it is placed on the eye, measuring the optical aberrations of the eye to be corrected, and determining the shape of the front face of the lens from the measured optical aberrations of the eye to be corrected combined with data relating to the shape determined for the rear face of the lens in order to correct the aberrations. The system includes measurement units for measuring the topography and the aberrations of the eye and an electronic calculator unit.

The transparency of the lens varies in inverse proportion to its illumination. A photochromic substance is incorporated into the material of the lens, which improves optical performance. A contact lens has at least one palpebral boss projecting locally from its external surface in its peripheral area. The palpebral boss is globally elongate in a circumferential direction and the slope P of its crest line at both circumferential ends is in the range 0.020 to 0.140 and preferably in the range 0.040 to 0.080. Applications include contact lenses for centered optical correction and contact lenses for presbyopia.
