A method for detecting a component including a concealed pattern includes: detecting infrared electromagnetic radiation reflected or emitted by a component including a first pattern, the component including: a substrate; the first pattern disposed over at least a portion of the substrate; an optional primer layer disposed between at least a portion of the substrate and at least a portion of the first pattern; and a first visibly opaque layer including an infrared transparent pigment, the first visibly opaque layer disposed over at least a portion of the first pattern; and comparing the reflectivity and/or absorbance of infrared electromagnetic radiation by the first pattern at one wavelength to the reflectivity and/or absorbance by the primer layer and/or the substrate at the same wavelength.

A system for monitoring a condition of an article including a conductive coating includes: a measurement device electrically connectable to the conductive coating of the article configured to sense an electrical property of the conductive coating; and a processor electrically connected to the measurement device. The processor is configured to: receive the sensed electrical property of the conductive coating from the measurement device; determine a resistance of the conductive coating based on the received sensed electrical property; determine an estimated remaining usable life of the article based on the determined resistance of the conductive coating; and generate an output signal representative of the determined estimated remaining usable life.

System and method for monitoring resistance of a conductive coating as an indicator of a condition of the conductive coating

A transparency includes a plurality of sheets. Each sheet of the plurality of sheets can include a first major surface, an opposite second major surface, and a peripheral surface between the first major surface and the second major surface. The transparency can further include: an inter-sheet layer positioned between the first major surface of one of the sheets of the plurality of sheets and the second major surface of an adjacent sheet of the plurality of sheets; and a wireless sensor positioned in the inter-sheet layer. The wireless sensor includes a sensory portion configured to measure information representative of a condition of a portion of the transparency and a wireless transmitter configured to wirelessly transmit the received information to a wireless receiver.

A network system for monitoring and storing data of aircraft intelligent windows or windshields to provide useable life of, provide real life performance of, and/or measure characteristics and/or properties of, the windshields forwards the data from sensors mounting the windshield to a window sensing hub having a microprocessor programed to receive and process the data to determine the performance of the windshield and formatting the data in accordance to a preset program, wherein the program includes providing data from the sensors that measures characteristics and properties of the windshield that are active during the period in which the data is taken. An aircraft central maintenance system connected to the window sensing hub receives the formatted information from the window sensing hub and unfiltered or unformatted information, wherein the unfiltered information from the windshield is acted on by the central maintenance system to provide an estimated useable life of the windshield.

Aerospace intelligent window system

A system for monitoring performance of an aircraft windshield includes a sensor comprising a sensory contact and an evaluation unit. The sensory contact is in physical contact with one or more components of the windshield, and generates a signal representative of the performance of the component(s) of the windshield. An electrical connector is secured to the surface of the windshield facing the interior of the aircraft. The signal from the sensory contact passes through the connector to the evaluation unit. The evaluation unit acts on the signal to determine the performance of the component(s) of the windshield, wherein the evaluation unit is spaced from and out of physical contact with the windshield and the electrical connector, and is in electrical contact with the electrical connector.

Intelligent window heat control system

A system for controlling light transmittance includes a panel which is capable of at least one of darkening and lightening in response to applied electric voltage and/or current. The panel includes at least one substrate, an electrically conductive coating on at least a portion of a surface of the at least one substrate forming at least one electrode, and an electrochromic medium covering portions of the at least one substrate and the at least one electrode and in electrical communication with the electrode. The system further includes a power supply in electrical communication with the at least one electrode and a controller in communication with the power supply configured to cause the power supply to apply a voltage and/or current to the at least one electrode according to a predetermined pattern for controlling the transmittance of the panel. The predetermined pattern comprises a plurality of micro-pulses which are less than or equal to 0.5 second in duration.

Pulsed electrochromic control for a panel and method of use

An insulated pipe includes an elongated tube having a first end, a second end, and a sidewall extending therebetween, including an inner surface and an outer surface. The insulated pipe also includes an insulating member covering a portion of the outer surface of the sidewall and a planar moisture sensor. The planar moisture sensor is positioned in the insulating member or between the insulating member and the outer surface of the tube sidewall. The planar moisture sensor includes: a first electrode having a flat conductive member having an inner surface and an outer surface; a second electrode spaced apart from the first electrode having a flat conductive member having an inner surface and an outer surface, and a dielectric layer. The dielectric layer includes an absorbent dielectric polymer material positioned between and in electrical contact with the inner surfaces of the first electrode and the second electrode.

Complex impedance moisture sensor and sensing method

A network system for monitoring and storing data of aircraft intelligent windows or windshields to provide useable life of, provide real life performance of, and/or measure characteristics and/or properties of, the windshields forwards the data from sensors mounting the windshield to a window sensing hub having a microprocessor programmed to receive and process the data to determine the performance of the windshield and formatting the data in accordance to a preset program, wherein the program includes providing data from the sensors that measures characteristics and properties of the windshield that are active during the period in which the data is taken. An aircraft central maintenance system connected to the window sensing hub receives the formatted information from the window sensing hub and unfiltered or unformatted information, wherein the unfiltered information from the windshield is acted on by the central maintenance system to provide an estimated useable life of the windshield.

An insulated pipe includes an elongated tube having a first end, a second end, and a sidewall extending therebetween; and an insulating member at least partially enclosing a portion of the sidewall, including at least one channel extending through at least a portion thereof. The insulated pipe also includes at least one coaxial moisture sensor positioned within at least a portion of the channel configured to sense moisture in the channel. The at least one coaxial moisture sensor includes: a dielectric member having a sleeve defining a center hole formed from an absorbent dielectric polymer material; an outer electrode electrically connected with an outer surface of the dielectric member including a moisture permeable sleeve which permits moisture to pass to the dielectric member; and an inner electrode having a wire extending through the center hole of and electrically connected with an inner surface of the dielectric member.

A transparency, e.g. an aircraft laminated windshield, includes one or more moisture sensors to monitor moisture penetration to monitor performance of the moisture barrier. At least one of the moisture sensors includes a dielectric between and in electrical contact with two electrically conductive electrodes. Alternating electrical current is applied to the electrodes to measure the complex impedance (ohms) of the dielectric to determine the amount of moisture within the laminated windshield in the area of the moisture sensor. With the information provided by the moisture sensors performance of the windshield is available to schedule timely repair or replacement of the windshield that is performing outside of acceptable limits.
