Display systems are described including augmented 1-dimensional pixel arrays and scanning mirrors. In one example, a pixel array includes first and second columns of pixels, relay optics configured to receive incident light and to output the incident light to a viewer, and a scanning mirror disposed to receive the light from the first and second columns of pixels and to reflect the received light toward the relay optics. The scanning mirror may move between a plurality of positions while the first and second columns emit light in temporally spaced pulses so as to form a perceived image at the relay optics having a higher resolution relative to the pixel pitch of the individual columns. Foveated rendering may provide for more efficient use of power and processing resources.

Techniques are described for enhanced eye tracking for display systems, such as augmented or virtual reality display systems. The display systems may include a light source configured to output light, a moveable diffractive grating configured to reflect light from the light source, the reflected light forming a scan pattern on the eye of the user, and light detectors to detect light reflected from the eye. The orientation of the diffractive grating can be moved such that the light reflected from the diffractive grating is scanned across the eye according to the scan pattern. Light intensity pattern(s) are obtained via the light detectors, with a light intensity pattern representing a light detector signal obtained by detecting light reflected by the eye as the light is scanned across the eye. One or more physiological characteristics and/or a rotation speed of the eye are determined based on detected light intensity pattern(s).

Enhanced eye tracking for augmented or virtual reality display systems

Techniques are described for enhanced eye tracking for display systems, such as augmented or virtual reality display systems. The display systems may include a light source configured to output light, a moveable diffractive grating configured to reflect light from the light source, the reflected light forming a scan pattern on the eye of the user, and light detectors to detect light reflected from the eye. The orientation of the diffractive grating can be moved such that the light reflected from the diffractive grating is scanned across the eye according to the scan pattern. Light intensity pattern(s) are obtained via the light detectors, with a light intensity pattern representing a light detector signal obtained by detecting light reflected by the eye as the light is scanned across the eye. Described herein are methods and display systems for enhanced eye tracking for display systems, such as augmented or virtual reality display systems. The display systems may include: a light source configured to output light and a moveable diffractive grating configured to reflect light from the light source, the reflected light forming a light pattern on the eye of the user; a plurality of light detectors to detect light reflected from the eye; and one or more processors. The display system changes the orientation of the diffractive grating, such that the light pattern reflected from the diffractive grating is scanned along an axis across the eye. Light intensity patterns are obtained via the light detectors, with a light intensity pattern representing a light detector signal obtained by detecting light reflected off of the eye as the light pattern is scanned across the eye. Due to differences in how light reflects off of different parts of the eye, different eye poses provide different light intensity patterns and the eye pose is determined based on detected light intensity pattern(s).

In some embodiments, the disclosed subject matter involves a head worn device (HWD) for viewing augmented reality, or virtual images. A projector coupled to the HWD may use a microelectromechanical systems projector and project onto a holographic lens of the HWD. Images may be projected into an eyebox area that is deemed comfortable to the user, the eyebox area located in one of a plurality of vertically adjacent recording zones. The recording zone for projection may be selected by the user, or be automatically selected based on configuration parameters of the HWD. Horizontal correction of the eyebox may be included. In an embodiment, multiple horizontal images are displayed in the selected recording zone, in different wavelengths. Another embodiment adjusts horizontal shift of the projected image based on user inputs. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Methods and apparatus to identify lenses of head-wearable apparatus are disclosed. Example glasses disclosed herein include a frame and an image generator coupled to the frame. A first lens is removably carriable by the frame. The first lens has a first identifier to provide a first code representative of a first optical characteristic of the first lens.
