To support and guide a sub-lance for a metallurgical furnace, a sub-lance carriage 3 and sub-lance guide 4 run on a track 1. The guide 4 is below the carriage and moves in dependence on the carriage movement for part of the carriage travel. To provide a simple means for control of the movement of the guide, the guide is suspended by a support 6, such as a cable, the top end of which engages the carriage but is caught by fixed stops 8 when the carriage moves below a certain point. The cable 6 is housed within a tubular guide 5 over part of its length.

Apparatus for supporting and guiding a sub-lance

A sublance for use in performing measurements and/or taking samples in a metallurgical furnace, which has an elongate outer body (3), (11) having at its upper end a suspension structure (4), and at its lower end (12) a probe (10). Near the upper end, the body is divided by a rotational coupling (8), (9) into two parts, the lower part 11 being relatively rotatable about the longitudinal axis, so that bending distortion of the lance in use can be reversed by turning the lance through 180.degree.. To achieve a simple construction, the inner and intermediate tubes (15), (14) within the lance are not rotationally divided but extend within the rotatable outer part (11) to the lower end (12) where the inner tube (15) is rotationally coupled to the probe.

Sublance for measuring and/or sampling in a metallurgical furnace

Apparatus for manufacturing steel includes a hood adapted to be connected to the mouth of a converter. The hood has at least one conduit opening into it for introducing secondary materials into the hood. In order to arrange monitoring points of the pressure within the hood cheaply and conveniently, the pressure-measuring points are incorporated into the upper sides of the conduits. Each conduit may also have a connection which enables it to be flushed out with an inert gas, thus preventing a dangerous build up of inflammable gases within the conduit.
