A user equipment, radio control node, method and computer program are disclosed. The user equipment is configured to communicate with other devices across a wireless communication network comprising a plurality of radio coverage cells, the user equipment being configured to respond to receipt of a message from the network, the message comprising a wait time, to not transmit a connection request until after expiry of the wait time; wherein the user equipment is configured during the wait time to receive paging requests from the network; and is configured to respond to at least some of the paging requests, the user equipment being configured to select the at least some of the paging requests to respond to in dependence upon paging information received from the network.

Responding to paging requests while waiting to request a connection to a wireless network

A method for performing load balancing of data flows from a user equipment (UE) between a first radio access network and a second radio access network, wherein the UE is attached to the said first radio access network, the method comprising providing preference data from the first radio access network to the UE representing radio related parameters, determining the presence of an access network discovery and selection function (ANDSF) of the UE, evaluating, at the UE, including using ANDSF if present, the preference data to determine if a data flow can be offloaded to the second radio access network, and on the basis of the evaluation, offloading a data flow of the UE from the first radio access network.

Load balancing of data flows

A method of controlling communication between a first network node and a second network node in a multi-carrier wireless communications system, network nodes and a computer program product are disclosed. The method of controlling communication between a first network node and a second network node in a multicarrier wireless communications system in which a predetermined set of a plurality of carriers are utilized to support communication between the first network node and the second network node, the predetermined set of the plurality of carriers comprising a primary carrier and at least one secondary carrier, comprises the steps of: determining an occurrence of an event requiring a change in the primary carrier; indicating to a third network node that a physical layer instruction is to be transmitted between said first network node and the second network node; and transmitting a physical layer instruction between the first network node and the second network node, the physical layer instruction encoding reselection information to cause the second network node to select a different carrier from the plurality of carriers as a new primary carrier. By sending the instruction using the layer one or physical layer, the speed at which the instruction can be transmitted between the network nodes is vastly increased, which enables fast switching to occur, thereby preventing a loss of communications between the network nodes. By indicating to a third network node that a physical layer instruction is to be transmitted between the first network node and the second network node, maintenance of synchronization is simplified and unpredictable network behavior is minimized.

Controlling communications in a multi-carrier wireless communication system

Wireless telecommunications network nodes, methods and computer program products are disclosed. A wireless telecommunications network node method, comprises determining a cause of a radio link failure which occurred when a user equipment is in proximity to an uplink-downlink imbalance region; and in response to the cause of the radio link failure, initiating action to optimize control of user equipment uplink-downlink decoupling-recoupling when in proximity to the uplink-downlink imbalance region. In this way, by establishing the cause of the radio link failure, it is possible to take action to alter the user equipment uplink-downlink decoupling-recoupling procedure in order to help prevent such radio link failures occurring in the future.

Wireless telecommunications network nodes and methods

An object of the invention is providing methods, apparatuses and a system for determining connection state assistive parameters. Compared with the prior art, according to the present invention, the core network element obtains the connection release time information and radio access network assistance information corresponding to the user equipment sent by the e NB, and when the user equipment transmits a request for network access service to the core network element, the core network element determines core network assistance information corresponding to the request for network access service based on the aforementioned information, and then transmits the core network assistance information to the e NB to act as connection state assistive parameters corresponding to the user equipment. Thereby, the present invention may enable the e NB to adjust/optimize the connection state assistive parameters corresponding to the e NB and the user equipment through providing ore network assistance information to the e NB by the core network element, reduce the transitions frequency between the idle state and the connection state, minimize transmission of network signaling, and reduce user equipment power consumption.

Methods, apparatuses, and system for determining connection state assistive parameters

A method of influencing operation of user equipment in a wireless telecommunications network, a computer program product and network control node operable to perform that method. The method comprises: providing user equipment with a neighbor cell list; selecting at least one priority criteria to be applied by user equipment to a cell included in said neighbor cell list; and communicating the selected priority criteria to user equipment, determining an action to be taken by user equipment in relation to a cell meeting said priority criteria and communicating said action to user equipment and wherein the action comprises: a measurement performance requirement to be applied in relation to a cell having a priority. It will be appreciated that aspects and embodiments may define a means to manage an expected increase in size of an NCL in HetNet deployments without a need to significantly increase user equipment complexity to meet measurement performance requirements.

Mobility techniques

User equipment and method of notifying a wireless communication network of impending autonomous cell reselection from a serving cell to a second cell. The user equipment comprises: monitoring logic, determining logic and notification logic. The monitoring logic is operable to monitor signals received from said serving cell and said second cell; the determining logic is operable to determine whether the signals received from said serving cell and said second cell meet predetermined cell reselection warning criteria, and the notification logic is operable, if said predetermined cell reselection warning criteria are met, to notify said serving cell of said impending autonomous user equipment cell reselection to said second cell. Accordingly, user equipment is operable to send an indication of cell reselection to a network prior to fully triggering a cell reselection procedure, thereby allowing a network to make preparations for an impending cell reselection event, thereby minimizing potential disruption to a network user.
