A system and method for determining an efficiency of gas extraction. A chamber allows inflow and outflow of the drilling fluid. An amount of gas extracted from a drilling fluid flowing through the chamber at a constant rate during a dynamic process is measured. A dissolution curve is obtained indicative of a gas remaining in the chamber after the dynamic process. An amount drawn from the chamber during a static process subsequent to the dynamic process is measured. An amount of gas from the drilling fluid during the static process is determined from a difference between the amount of gas drawn from the chamber during the static process and an amount of gas indicated by the dissolution curve. The gas extraction efficiency is determined from a ratio of the amount of gas extracted during the static process and the amount of gas extracted during the dynamic process.

Methods and systems for controlling drilling operations are described. The methods include conveying a drilling tool from the earth surface into a wellbore and operating the drilling tool to drill in a drilling direction, wherein drilling mud is conveyed from the earth surface to the drilling tool and returned to the earth surface, obtaining gas data from the drilling mud that returns to the earth surface, determining a reservoir property from the gas data, and adjusting the drilling direction based on the determined reservoir property.

Techniques for evaluating hydrocarbon reserves using tool response models are provided. An example method includes measuring a first fluid distribution of a first formation proximate to a first wellbore and measuring a second fluid distribution of a second formation proximate to a second wellbore. The method further includes generating a first tool response model for the first formation based at least in part on the first fluid distribution and generating a second tool response model for the second formation based at least in part on the second fluid distribution. The method further includes comparing results of the first tool response model to results of the second tool response model to determine a fluid distribution difference between the first formation and the second formation and implementing a drilling command to alter drilling of one of the first and second wellbores based at least in part on the fluid distribution difference.

In one aspect, a method for determining amount of selected gas extracted from a drilling fluid during drilling of a wellbore and total amount of gas present in such fluid is disclosed, that in one embodiment may include; flowing the drilling fluid through a gas trap at a constant flow rate; extracting the selected gas released from the drilling fluid flowing through gas trap and determining therefrom the amount of the extracted gas from the drilling fluid; trapping a constant volume of the drilling fluid in the gas trap; extracting the selected gas released from the constant volume and determining therefrom the total amount of the selected gas present in the drilling during drilling of the wellbore. The method further includes determining the efficiency of the gas extraction process from the amount of the selected gas extracted from the fluid flowing through the gas tap and the total amount of the gas in the constant volume.

The systems and methods include drilling a borehole within the earth formation, receiving data acquired within the borehole in the earth formation, analyzing the data to locate a plurality of data structures formed by the data, the plurality of data structures including a first structure at a first location and a second structure at a second location, projecting the first structure as a first geological projection intersecting the first location, and projecting the second structure as a second geological projection intersecting the second location, classifying the first geological projection and the second geological projection based on a hierarchy of geological feature types to generate a hierarchical classification, and adjusting one or more of the first geological projection and the second geological projection based on the hierarchical classification.

A method for generating a log of a value of a property of a fluid in an earth formation versus depth includes: obtaining a plurality of samples of drilling fluid that are entrained with a formation gas and correlating each sample to a depth in a borehole from which the formation gas was entrained in the drilling fluid; extracting the formation gas from each sample to provide a plurality of gas samples; analyzing each formation gas sample to provide a chemical composition of each formation gas sample in the plurality of formation gas samples; and determining a property value of the fluid in the earth formation versus depth using the chemical composition of each formation gas sample in the plurality of formation gas samples to provide the log.

A method of estimating one or more properties of an earth formation includes acquiring formation fluid data indicative of a qualitative property of a formation fluid in a near-field region of an earth formation surrounding a borehole, the near field region including a surface of the borehole, and acquiring acoustic data based on acoustic signals transmitted into a far-field region of the formation, and estimating a property of one or more fractures in the far-field region based on the acoustic data. The method also includes combining the formation fluid data and the acoustic data, and estimating, by a processing device, at least one fracture characteristic of the formation in the near-field region and the far-field region based on the combined data.

A method for generating a phase envelope log to characterize a subsurface formation includes drilling the borehole with a drill string, circulating a drilling fluid in the borehole, drawing a fluid sample representing a fluid contained in the subsurface formation, estimating a PVT parameter indicative of an in-situ condition of the subsurface formation from the drawn fluid sample, determining at least two phase envelopes at different depths using the estimated PVT parameter, and creating a phase envelope log formed of a continuous series of phase envelopes using the phase envelopes. A method for estimating an inverted parameter of a subsurface formation includes measuring a first parameter of the subsurface formation and measuring a second parameter of the subsurface formation. The apparatus also includes an analysis unit configured to analyze the sample of the borehole fluid at each of a plurality of sample times and estimate amounts of hydrocarbons in the borehole fluid, and a processing device configured to estimate one or more ratios of an amount of at least one hydrocarbon gas to an amount of at least another hydrocarbon gas at each sample time, analyze the one or more ratios to estimate a type of hydrocarbon fluid associated with the ratio, and automatically generate a fluid log that displays an indication of the type at each of the plurality of sample times.
