Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for providing customized television advertisements. In one aspect, television advertising templates are used for generating customized television advertisements. The television advertisement templates include targeting criteria specifying targeting conditions for the television advertising template, which are conditions for selecting the television advertisement template for an advertisement availability, and content selection criteria specifying availability content associated with an advertisement availability for use in selecting variable advertisement content elements for inclusion in a customized television advertisement generated from the television advertising template. The variable advertisement content elements can include video elements, audio elements, and text elements.

A method for identifying a video streamed from a server to a client, includes receiving at a processor of an intermediary between the server and client, a video data packet; determining if the video data packet comprises a separated identification of the streamed video; when the video data packet comprises a separated identification, determining if the separated identification is readable to identify the streamed video; when the separated identification is readable to identify the streamed video, identifying the streamed video; and when the separated identification is not readable to identify the streamed video, performing content analysis of the video data packet, comprising: creating a fingerprint of data extracted from the video data packet, and comparing the fingerprint to reference fingerprints to determine a match.

A method executes at a server system with one or more processors and memory. The server receives demographic information for a plurality of household members. The demographic information includes at least age and gender. The server receives web activity information for the household. The server identifies one or more web activity sessions from the web activity information and selects one of the web activity sessions. The server identifies one or more web sites visited during the selected web activity session and accesses demographic skew data for at least a subset of the web sites visited. The demographic skew data for a web site identifies fractions of visitors to the web site from predefined demographic segments. The server associates a household member with the web activity session at least in part by correlating the demographic skew data of the web sites visited with the demographic information of the first household member.

The method includes: receiving an event log file at a distributed computer system that includes multiple computers; dynamically selecting one or more computers according to a predefined sharding function; at each of the selected computers: allocating a set of compressed event records, which corresponds to a subset of the event log file, at predetermined locations within the memory of the computer; and in accordance with a predefined schedule, replicating the compressed event records from a respective one of the selected computers to one or more other computers of the distributed system such that there are at least two replicas of any event record on at least two computers of the distributed computer system.

A media correlation method, executed by a processor, determines an identity of a program. The method includes detecting a sign-in by a first media device; determining a location of the first media device relative to a second media device; receiving from the first media device, content clips emanating from the second media device; and identifying a program displayed on the second media device based on the received content clips.

A method executes at a server system with one or more processors and memory. The server receives demographic information for a plurality of household members. The demographic information includes at least age and gender. The server receives television viewing information for the household. The server identifies one or more television viewing sessions from the television viewing information and selects one of the television viewing sessions. The server identifies one or more television programs tuned during the selected televisions viewing session and accesses demographic skew data for at least a subset of the television programs tuned. The demographic skew data for a television program identifies fractions of viewers of the television program from predefined demographic segments. The server associates a household member with the television viewing session at least in part by correlating the demographic skew data of the television programs tuned with the demographic information of the first household member.

An audience measurement or personalized recommendation system may be actively trained for each panel member for a training period, during which the presence of each member is recorded while content is displayed. Panel members may carry or wear portable devices with wireless transmitters which may be detected by the measurement system. For example, each panel member may wear a wristband including a wireless transmitter broadcasting an identification code, and a measurement device may include a wireless receiver to receive broadcast identification codes and determine that the corresponding one or more panel members are present during display of content. An inference engine may create personalized profiles of each panel participant during the training period. After the training period, panel participants may stop carrying or wearing the devices, and the inference engine may determine, based on the profiles, which participants are likely present when content is being viewed.

Systems and methods for active training of broadcast personalization and audience measurement systems using a presence band

A TV audience survey system for determining the TV viewing activities of a plurality of individuals in a household includes a master device and multiple tags, each tag assigned to an individual. After an individual logs into the system and starts watching the TV, the master device communicates with the corresponding tag repeatedly to accumulate data representing the individual's TV viewing activities. Such data can be used to determine when the individual stops watching the TV for an extended period of time without logging out of the system and when the household member remains watching the TV after logging or being logged out of the system. The master device then reports the accumulated data to a remote server, which uses the data to determine whether the individual complies with the logging protocol defined by the TV audience survey system and update the TV viewership data associated with this household.

A method for providing efficient and accurate estimates of TV viewership ratings through a distributed computer system that includes multiple computers is disclosed. The method includes: receiving a query from a client at the distributed computer system; dynamically selecting one or more computers according to a predefined sharding function; at each of the selected computers, determining a count of qualified event records that satisfy the query; aggregating the respective counts of qualified event records determined by the selected computers; statistically projecting the aggregated count of qualified event records into an estimated total count of qualified event records on the distributed computer system; and returning the estimated total count of qualified event records to the requesting client.

A system and method for re-serving shared content are provided. The system includes a first impression detection unit to detect a user's consumption of the shared content via the metering data; a user detection unit to detect a device associated with the user; a shared content retrieval unit to retrieve the shared content based on the user and the device; and a shared content communication unit to transmit the shared content to the detected device.

The system includes a data store comprising a computer readable medium storing a program of instructions for performing the protection of privacy via the gateway; a processor that executes the program of instructions; an event detection unit to detect an event behind the gateway; a correlation unit to detect a source associated with the detected event; a semi-stable identification unit to assign a semi-stable identification for the associated source with the detected event; a vector assigning unit to assign a vector to data associated with the semi-stable identification, the vector being related to the source independent any personal identification information (PII); and a communication unit to transmit the vector to instigate an action.

Protecting privacy via a gateway

A system for logging the TV viewing activities at a household includes a TV messaging device at the household and a remote TV viewership measurement server communicatively coupled to the messaging device. The TV messaging device receives an infrared signal including a TV operation code from a remote control device within the household. The infrared signal is directed to a particular TV to perform a predefined operation. The TV messaging device generates a TV operation message including the TV operation code and a household identifier associated with the household and transmits the TV operation message to the TV viewership measurement server. Upon receipt of the TV operation message, the TV viewership measurement server tries to identify one of multiple TV devices within the household as being the target of the TV operation code and updates TV viewership data associated with the household in accordance with the TV operation code.

Content information is received from a first client. The content information is derived from a video stream being played on the first client device. The content information is matched to a content fingerprint. A set of instructions associated with the matched content fingerprint is determined. The determined set of instructions is sent to a second client device that is associated with a user of the fist client device for execution.
