A well construction system having well construction equipment operable to perform well construction operations to drill a well, power equipment operable to supply electrical power to the well construction equipment via an electrical power bus, operational data sources operable to output operational data, and a power manager communicatively connected with the operational data sources and the power equipment. The operational data sources may include sensors associated with at least one of the well construction equipment, the power equipment, and the electrical power bus. The power manager receives the operational data and outputs power control data to the power equipment to control the electrical power being supplied by the power equipment to the well construction equipment via the electrical power bus during the well construction operations based on the operational data.

Power management at a wellsite

An apparatus for controlling a subsea blowout preventor (BOP) includes a control system for controlling a subsea BOP of a subsea stack assembly installed over a subsea oil and gas well. The control system includes a first topside control device and a second topside control device, and a first subsea control device and a second subsea control device. The first topside control device, the second topside control device, the first subsea control device, and the second subsea control device are each communicatively connected with the BOP and operable to control operation of the BOP. The first subsea control device is a portion of a first control pod of the subsea stack assembly. The second subsea control device is a portion of a second control pod of the subsea stack assembly. The first topside control device is communicatively connected with the second topside control device via a ring communication network.

An example well construction system includes well construction equipment, a power supply system, and a control system. The well construction equipment performs well construction operations. The power supply system outputs electrical power to the well construction equipment. The power supply system includes an electrical generator unit and a control system including a processor and a memory storing a computer program code. The computer program code causes the control system to control an electrical power output level of the power supply system during the well construction operations. The computer program code also causes the control system to control operation of the well construction equipment during the well construction operations based on the electrical power output level during the well construction operations and an electrical power demand level of the well construction equipment during the well construction operations.

Systems and methods for managing power at a wellsite. A system includes well construction equipment, power equipment, a power manager, power equipment sensors operable to output power equipment sensor data indicative of operational status of the power equipment, and a human-machine interface usable by a human user to enter power management settings. The power manager is operable to receive the power equipment sensor data and receive the power management settings, wherein each power management setting is associated with a corresponding mode of operation of the power manager. The power manager is further operable to, for each power management setting, change the mode of operation of the power manager to the mode of operation associated with that power management setting, and for each mode of operation, cause the power equipment to supply electrical power to the well construction equipment in a predetermined manner with respect to that mode of operation.

A well construction system having well construction equipment operable to perform well construction operations to drill a well, power equipment operable to supply electrical power to the well construction equipment via an electrical power bus, operational data sources operable to output operational data, and a power manager communicatively connected with the operational data sources and the power equipment. The operational data sources may include well construction equipment sensors, power equipment sensors, and an electrical power bus sensor. The power manager receives the operational data and outputs power control data to the power equipment to control the electrical power being supplied by the power equipment to the well construction equipment via the electrical power bus during the well construction operations based on the operational data.

A well construction system with motor equipment having at least one of a drawworks motor, a top drive motor, or a combination thereof, and an electrical power system having a power recovery and regeneration system. The power recovery and regeneration system includes at least one energy storage device that is not a capacitor bank. The well construction system may be operated by generating AC power that is made available on an AC node, converting AC power available on the AC node to DC power available on a DC node, storing energy based on DC power available on the DC node by the power recovery and regeneration system, and regenerating the stored energy from the power recovery and regeneration system to AC power, DC power, or a combination thereof for consumption by an electrical consumer of the well construction system.

Methods and apparatus for simultaneous operation of a variable-frequency drive (VFD) and a controller. The VFD drives an electric motor of a drilling rig machine. The controller controls temperature of an insulated-gate bipolar transistor device (IGBT) of the VFD by controlling an air mover in response to real-time temperature data. The air mover generates airflow into a passage, the airflow thereby interacting with radiating members extending into the passage from a heat sink thermally coupled with the IGBT in the inner housing outside the passage.

An integrated drilling rig machine is disclosed. An integrated power and electronics unit (IPEU) includes all components necessary to transmit power from a generator to rig machines such as a mud pump, drawworks, top drive, etc. A housing contains a rectifier, a transformer, inverter(s), and starter motors. The inverters are coupled to rig machines and the starter motors are coupled to auxiliary devices such as cooling fans, lubrication pumps, communication systems, etc. A controller controls operation of the IPEU according to instructions received from a remote device.

Systems and methods for dissipating heat from an electrical component using an external structure of a trailer or shed as a heat sink are disclosed. A heat-producing electrical component such as a variable frequency drive (VFD) using an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) is housed in a trailer and is thermally coupled to an exterior wall of the trailer to use the wall as a heat sink to dissipate heat from the VFD and IGBT. An adapter can be used to couple VFDs and IGBTs of different sizes and configurations to a support site on the exterior wall.

Apparatus and methods pertaining to a moveable well construction apparatus to be electrically energized via an electrical power transmission path extending between a stationary power source and the moveable well construction apparatus. The path comprises cables and connectors. A system comprises a detector operable for generating information indicative of whether the path is properly installed. The system permits the path to be electrically energized when the detector-generated information indicates the path is properly installed, and prevents the path from being electrically energized when the detector-generated information indicates the path is not properly installed.
