A long travel aerostatic linear stage includes a plurality of rails, a plurality of planar bearing plates, and a plurality of porous media gas bearing. The plurality of planar bearing plates are aligned with and attached to the rails. Each planar bearing plate includes a plurality of metal plates having machined air bearing surfaces. The plurality of porous media gas bearings float on the bearing plates in a non-contact frictionless manner to support a traversing load and control lateral motion of the rails. The rails may include at least one rail which supports the traversing load and at least one rail which controls the lateral motion. The bearing plates are restrained and attached to the rails in a manner that ensures the planar nature of the bearing plates are maintained and the air gap is effective.

Long travel air bearing linear stage

This invention is a method for sculpturing a laser beam ( ) in a predetermined pattern using a device ( ) between the laser source ( ) and the target ( ). The method comprises a series of sequential steps in which at least two regions of the cornea ( ) are each exposed to increasingly larger portions of the laser beam ( ). In the preferred embodiment, two pairs of complementary regions of the cornea ( ) will be sequentially exposed to laser radiation. In each such region, a first part will be exposed to a substantially segmental portion of the beam ( ), and then at least another larger substantially segmental portion of the beam ( ) in which the larger segmental portion, includes the smaller segmental portion. In the preferred embodiment, the target ( ) is the human eye, and the predetermined pattern is intended to shape the eye to treat it for astigmatism, myopia, or hyperopia.

Method and device for sculpturing laser beams

A system and device for sculpturing a laser beam along a laser axis to a target upon command using a device between the laser source and the target. The device includes an adjustable iris aperture perpendicular to the axis. At least one door is aligned to limit the laser beam path. A controller adjusts the aperture and the door to sculpture the laser beam in a predetermined pattern. The controller also controls the laser to direct a laser beam on a target in the predetermined pattern which may be pulsed, the duration and intensity of the pulses being controlled by the controller. An encoders locates the iris and the door with respect to the axis for comparison of the positions with the predetermined pattern. The device is rotatable in clockwise and counterclockwise directions by at least 180 degrees. The doors preferably includes a pair of parallel, diametrically opposed door sections, one section being on each side of the axis that may be operated independently so as to permit movement of each section without the other section or the sections may move symmetrically and simultaneously about the axis. A computer is preferably used to control the positions of the iris and the door means with respect to the axis for comparison with the predetermined pattern. In the preferred embodiment, the target is the human eye and the predetermined pattern is intended to shape the eye to treat it for astigmatism, myopia, or hyperopia.
