A downhole mud motor includes a driveshaft rotatably disposed in a driveshaft housing, a bearing mandrel coupled to the driveshaft, wherein the bend adjustment assembly includes a first configuration that provides a first deflection angle between the driveshaft housing and the bearing mandrel, wherein the bend adjustment assembly includes a second configuration that provides a second deflection angle between the driveshaft housing and the bearing mandrel, and a locking assembly including a locked configuration configured to lock the bend adjustment assembly into one of the first configuration and the second configuration until the downhole mud motor has at least one of reached a predefined depth in the wellbore, and a mud weight has reached a predefined mud weight threshold at a given depth, in response to which the locking assembly is configured to actuate from the locked configuration to an unlocked configuration.

Depth activated downhole adjustable bend assemblies

A downhole mud motor includes a driveshaft housing, a driveshaft rotatably disposed in the driveshaft housing, a bearing mandrel coupled to the driveshaft, and a bend adjustment assembly including a first position, wherein the bend adjustment assembly includes a second position, wherein the bend adjustment assembly includes an adjustment mandrel having a first axial position corresponding to the first position of the bend adjustment assembly and a second axial position which corresponds to the second position of the bend adjustment assembly, and wherein the bend adjustment assembly is prevented from actuating from the first position to the second position when the adjustment mandrel is in the first axial position, and wherein the bend adjustment assembly is permitted to actuate between the first position and the second position when the adjustment mandrel is in a second axial position that is axially spaced from the first axial position.

A downhole motor for directional drilling includes a driveshaft assembly including a driveshaft housing and a driveshaft rotatably disposed within the driveshaft housing, a bearing assembly including a bearing housing and a bearing mandrel rotatably disposed within the bearing housing, wherein the bearing mandrel is configured to couple with a drill bit, a bend adjustment assembly configured to adjust a bend setting of the downhole motor, a lock piston including an unlocked position, and a locked position configured to lock the bend setting of the bend adjustment assembly, one or more hydraulic pumps configured to actuate the lock piston into the unlocked position to unlock the bend adjustment assembly, and an electronics package configured to indicate the bend setting of the bend adjustment assembly.

Wired downhole adjustable mud motors

A downhole motor for directional drilling includes a driveshaft assembly including a driveshaft housing and a driveshaft rotatably disposed within the driveshaft housing, a bearing assembly including a bearing housing and a bearing mandrel rotatably disposed within the bearing housing, wherein the bearing mandrel is configured to couple with a drill bit, a bend adjustment assembly including a first position that provides a first deflection angle between a longitudinal axis of the driveshaft housing and a longitudinal axis of the bearing mandrel, and a second position that provides a second deflection angle between the longitudinal axis of the driveshaft housing and the longitudinal axis of the bearing mandrel that is different from the first deflection angle, and one or more hydraulic pumps configured to actuate the bend adjustment assembly between the first position and the second position.

A downhole motor includes a driveshaft assembly including a driveshaft housing and a driveshaft rotatably disposed within the driveshaft housing, and a bearing assembly including a bearing housing and a bearing mandrel rotatably disposed within the bearing housing, wherein the bearing mandrel is configured to couple with a drill bit, wherein the bearing assembly is configured to provide a first flowpath extending into a central passage of the bearing mandrel from an annulus formed between the bearing mandrel and the bearing housing and a second flowpath separate from the first flowpath, that extends through a bearing of the bearing assembly that is disposed radially between the bearing mandrel and the bearing housing, wherein a plurality of rotary seals are positioned radially between the bearing mandrel and the bearing housing to form an sealed chamber that is spaced from the bearing of the bearing assembly.

Hybrid bearing assemblies for downhole motors

A bend adjustment assembly for a downhole mud motor includes a driveshaft housing, a driveshaft rotatably disposed in the driveshaft housing, a bearing mandrel coupled to the driveshaft, wherein the bend adjustment assembly includes a first position that provides a first deflection angle between a longitudinal axis of the driveshaft housing and a longitudinal axis of the bearing mandrel, a second position that provides a second deflection angle, and a third position that provides a third deflection angle, and an actuator assembly configured to shift the bend adjustment assembly between the first position, the second position, and the third position in response to a change in at least one of flowrate of a drilling fluid supplied to the downhole mud motor, pressure of the drilling fluid supplied to the downhole mud motor, and relative rotation between the driveshaft housing and the bearing mandrel.

A downhole motor for directional drilling includes a driveshaft assembly including a driveshaft housing and a driveshaft rotatably disposed within the driveshaft housing, a bearing assembly including a bearing housing and a bearing mandrel rotatably disposed within the bearing housing, wherein the bearing mandrel is configured to couple with a drill bit, a bend adjustment assembly configured to adjust a bend setting of the downhole motor, and an electronics package coupled to the driveshaft assembly, wherein the electronics package is configured to receive data from sensors of the downhole motor.

A driveshaft assembly includes a driveshaft including a longitudinal shaft axis, a first end, a second end, and a radially outer surface. The first end includes a plurality of recesses extending radially inward from the radially outer surface. The recesses each include a convex engagement surface. The driveshaft assembly also includes a first end housing including a longitudinal housing axis and an axially extending receptacle. The receptacle includes a plurality of planar receptacle surfaces. In addition, the driveshaft assembly includes a plurality of torque transfer keys configured to transfer torque between the driveshaft and first end housing. Each of the torque transfer keys includes a planar key surface and a concave key surface. The convex engagement surface of each recess engages the concave key surface of one of the torque transfer keys. The planar key surface of each torque transfer key engages one of the planar receptacle surfaces.

Universal driveshaft assembly

A system for generating pressure pulses in drilling fluid includes a concentric drive power section. The power section includes a stator and a rotor rotatably disposed in the stator. The rotor is coaxially aligned with the stator. The system also includes a valve. The valve includes a first valve member coupled to the stator and a second valve member coupled to the rotor. The second valve member is configured to rotate with the rotor relative to the first valve member and the stator. The rotation of the second valve member relative to the first valve member is configured to generate pressure pulses in drilling fluid flowing through the concentric drive power section.

Valves for actuating downhole shock tools in connection with concentric drive systems

A bend adjustment assembly includes a driveshaft housing, a driveshaft disposed in the driveshaft housing, a bearing mandrel coupled to the driveshaft, wherein the assembly includes a first position that provides a first deflection angle, wherein the bend adjustment assembly includes a second position that provides a second deflection angle that is different from the first deflection angle, and an actuator assembly configured to shift the bend adjustment assembly between the first position and the second position in response to a change in at least one of flowrate of a drilling fluid supplied to the downhole mud motor, pressure of the drilling fluid supplied to the downhole mud motor, and relative rotation between the driveshaft housing and the bearing mandrel, wherein the actuator assembly includes an actuator housing through which the bearing mandrel extends and an actuator piston configured to transfer torque between the bearing mandrel and the actuator housing.

A lubrication system includes a pair of mating surfaces subject to relative motion and a source of lubrication in communication with the mating surfaces. A microfluidic channel system including at least one diffuser element is disposed in an interface between the mating surfaces to create a coherent fluid film at the interface in response to the relative motion.

A thread profile for rotary shouldered threaded connections uses different thread root radii for the pin thread and the box thread in order to optimize stress distribution and maximize thread contact area. The thread profile may be adapted for use in double-shouldered, two-start, taper-threaded connections to replace currently-used threaded connections such as the rotor-to-adapter connection in a downhole motor. The thread profile may incorporate an undercut buttress design.

A driveshaft assembly includes a driveshaft with a shaft axis, a first end, and a radially outer surface. The first end includes a plurality of recesses extending radially inward from the radially outer surface and each including an engagement surface. The driveshaft assembly also includes an end housing with a receptacle including a plurality of planar receptacle surfaces. Further, the driveshaft assembly includes a torque transfer assembly including a plurality of torque transfer keys each with a planar key surface and a convex key surface, and an adapter including a plurality of concave adapter surfaces and a plurality of planar adapter surfaces. The engagement surface of the each recess engages the planar key surface of one of the keys. The convex key surface of each key engages one of the concave adapter surfaces. Each of the planar adapter surfaces of the adapter engage with one of the receptacle surfaces.

In addition, the downhole motor includes a bearing assembly including a bearing housing and a bearing mandrel rotatably disposed within the bearing housing. The bearing mandrel has a first end directly connected to the driveshaft with a universal joint and a second end coupled to a drill bit. Further, the downhole motor includes an adjustment mandrel configured to adjust an acute deflection angle &#x3b8; between the central axis of the bearing housing and the central axis of the driveshaft housing. The adjustment mandrel has a central axis coaxially aligned with the bearing housing, a first end coupled to the driveshaft housing, and a second end coupled to the bearing housing.
