A scanning system for mapping the degree of uniformity of gas flow in the cavity of a laser includes a carriage mounted for movement along a set of parallel tracks disposed along a side of the laser cavity. The carriage mounts an infrared detector in radiation receiving relationship with the laser cavity. A screw drive mechanism is drivingly coupled to the carriage for moving it in opposite directions on the tracks. Spaced windows along the side of the laser cavity allows passage of radiation from the laser cavity to the detector. Because of the alternating relationship between transmissive windows and non-transmissive plates which defined the windows, successive portions of a voltage signal generated by the detector representing separate measurements can be easily identified with successive positions of the carriage along the laser cavity, and thus with particular successive portions of the laser cavity where each measurement was taken.

Scanning system for mapping gas flow uniformity in a laser

A generating device for producing a laser energizing gas in the singlet delta, electronic state comprising a vacuum chamber; a tubular reaction chamber positioned within said vacuum chamber, said reaction chamber having a closed end and an oppositely disposed open end; means positioned in said closed end for introducing a flow of a gaseous reactant into said reaction chamber; means positioned adjacent said closed end at an angle perpendicular to the position of said gas introducing means for introducing a stream of a liquid reactant into said gas flow to effect a chemical reaction therebetween and the generation of a laser energizing, singlet delta gas; and means for interconnection to a lasing device for directing a flow of said generated, singlet delta gas to a lasing cavity.

Tubular singlet delta oxygen generator

Iodine vapor is supplied to an oxygen iodine laser by an improved iodine vaporizer. The vaporizer has a radiation transparent window and iodine crystals are contained in the vaporizer. Broad beam radiation from a variable intensity source is directed through the window into the vaporizer where it is absorbed by the iodine crystals, causing the iodine crystals to sublime. The iodine vapor is transported to the laser by a carrier gas flowed through the vaporizer. Coarse control of the iodine flow is achieved by controlling the carrier gas flow. Control of the amount of iodine vapor introduced into the carrier gas flow is achieved by varying the amount of radiation directed into the vaporizer.

Method and apparatus for iodine vaporization

CW laser action achieved on the .sup.2P 178-.sup.2P 3/2 transition of the iodine atom by energy transfer from the .sup.1 .DELTA. metastable state of O.sub.2. The effluent from a conventional oxygen generator was mixed with molecular iodine at the entrance of a longitudinal flow laser cavity where the I.sub.2 was dissociated by a small amount of O.sub.2 (.sup.1 .SIGMA.) that was present in the flow due to energy pooling processes. The measured output power was greater than 4mW.
