A lubricant including a plurality of segments including a divalent center segment and two sidechain segments, each including a perfluoroalkyl ether moieties is provided in which a dewetting thickness of the lubricant may be determined based in-part on a segment weight average molecular weight of the segments. A magnetic recording medium and a magnetic data storage system including the lubricant are also provided.

Lubricants and methods to determine dewetting thickness thereof

In one embodiment, a structure includes: a substrate; and a monolayer of nanoparticles positioned above the substrate, where the nanoparticles are each grafted to one or more oligomers and/or polymers, and where each of the polymers and/or oligomers includes at least a first functional group configured to bind to the nanoparticles. In another embodiment, a structure includes: a substrate; a structured layer positioned above the substrate, the structured layer comprising a plurality of nucleation regions and a plurality of non-nucleation regions; and a crystalline layer positioned above the structured layer, where the plurality of nucleation regions have a pitch in a range between about 5 nm to about 20 nm.

Self-assembled nanoparticles with polymeric and/or oligomeric ligands

In one embodiment, a method for forming a substantially monodisperse lubricant includes: providing a plurality of perfluoropolyether (PFPE) precursors, each PFPE precursor including two end segments and a PFPE backbone disposed therebetween; protecting one of the end segments of each PFPE precursor with one or more protecting agents to form a plurality of mono-protected PFPE precursors, each mono-protected PFPE precursor including a protected end segment and an unprotected end segment; and coupling the unprotected end segment of each of the mono-protected PFPE precursors to the unprotected end segment of another of the mono-protected PFPE precursors via a coupling agent to form multidentate PFPE structures. In another embodiment, a substantially monodisperse lubricant includes a plurality of multidentate perfluoropolyether (PFPE) structures, each multidentate PFPE structure including at least two end segments and a middle segment therebetween, wherein the multidentate PFPE structures have a molecular weight that is substantially the same.

A novel and safe composition has been discovered that is effective for cleaning dental appliances (e.g. removable braces, retainers, dentures, etc.). This composition bleaches, disinfects, and deodorizes the appliance, while removing plaque that has accumulated on the appliance during wear. The composition comprises a chloramine bleaching agent that liberates hypochlorous acid upon contact with water, a surfactant, a water-soluble carboxylic acid and an alkaline base to produce effervescence and regulate pH, a sequestering agent for alkaline earth metal ions, a drying agent, and an indicator dye that signifies the end of the cleansing process. In a preferred method of using this invention, the premixed components are added to water, and the dental appliance is submerged in the resulting effervescent solution until a color change indicates that cleaning is complete. This invention provides a safe, effective, and convenient method for cleansing and disinfecting dental appliances.
