The tibial implant includes an integral baseplate, keel and four spikes. Each of the spikes include a non-tapering section and a tapering section, four free ends and four fillets. The spikes are specifically spaced about the baseplate and include porous outer surfaces adjacent to the baseplate.

A method for removing a stem portion of an orthopedic implant from a bone comprises exposing an implanted orthopedic implant having a body portion, a stem portion interconnected to the body and a porous metal section forming an interconnection between the body and the stem portion. A cutting tool is mounted on a holder connected to an exposed surface of the orthopedic implant. The porous section is aligned with the cutting tool mounted on the holder. The entire porous section is cut by moving the cutting tool therethrough in a direction transverse to the stem portion axis. The implant body portion is then removed and then the stem portion is removed from the bone. The cutting tool may be a saw or chisel which may be mounted on a guide fixed to the body portion.

Method of manufacturing a tibial implant

Aspects of the present disclosure relate generally to preparing models of three-dimensional structures. In particular, a model of a three-dimensional structure constructed of porous geometries is prepared. A component file including a porous CAD volume having a boundary is prepared. A space including the porous CAD volume is populated with unit cells. The unit cells are populated with porous geometries having a plurality of struts having nodes on each end. The space is populated with at least one elongated fixation element extending beyond the boundary to produce an interlocking feature enabling assembly or engagement with a mating structure.

A tibial implant system has an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene tibial insert which can engage with either one of two tibial trays through differing means of engagement. The tibial insert includes a locking wire and locking tab disposed along an anterior surface and a locking recess disposed along a posterior surface. A first polymeric tibial tray includes a bead along an anterior wall and an undercut area along a posterior wall. A second metallic tibial tray includes a plurality of barbs along an anterior wall and an undercut area along a posterior wall.

A method of reinforcing the bone in an acetabulum for receiving a prosthetic acetabular implant includes preparing a surface of the acetabulum to receive an acetabular implant. At least one porous generally cylindrical bone reinforcement element is provided. At least one bore is drilled in an area of the acetabulum receiving the prosthetic acetabular implant for receiving at least one and preferably more reinforcement elements in the form of cylindrical pilings. The cylindrical porous bone reinforcement element is inserted in the bore such that an exposed surface of the porous bone reinforcement element is adjacent the surface of the acetabulum. The acetabular implant is then implanted with an outer surface of the acetabular implant supported by the reinforcement members.

Porous bone reinforcements

The invention relates to implantable medical devices, particularly, to porous structures for such devices. In one aspect, the invention provides a porous metal scaffold comprising a porous metal network having pores defined by metal webs, the metal webs covered with at least one layer of metal particles bonded to the metal webs. In other aspects, the invention provides methods of forming porous scaffolds. In one such aspect, the method includes providing a polymer foam; forming a skin of biocompatible metal on the polymer foam by low temperature arc vapor deposition; and heating the polymer foam and the metal skin above the decomposition temperature of the polymer foam in an inert gas atmosphere; thereby the polymer foam decomposes producing a green metal foam. In yet other aspects, the invention provides methods of improving stability of porous scaffolds.

Porous metallic scaffold for tissue ingrowth

An anchor for fixing a ligament or tendon replacement in a bore formed in a bone has two parts. A first partially cylindrical part has a semi-circular bore therethrough extending along an axis. The bore tapers conically inwardly with respect to the axis from a larger radius at a first end to a smaller radius at second end. The outer surface of the partially cylindrical part is spaced at a constant radius from the axis between the first and second ends. The first and second parts have side walls formed between the bore and the outer surface which walls extend along a plane which forms an angle with respect to the central axis. When the two parts are engaged along their side wails and slide with respect to the axis the outer diameter of the two parts enlarges.

Porous tendon anchor

An implantable medical device includes a porous metal foam or foam-like structure having pores defined by metal struts or webs wherein the porous structure has directionally controlled pore characteristics. The pore characteristics controlled include one or more of the metal structure porosity, pore size, pore shape, pore size distribution and strut thickness. The pore characteristics may vary in one or more directions throughout the structure. Preferably the pore characteristics are controlled to match the porous metal structure to various mechanical and biological requirements of different regions of the structure in order to optimize aspects of the implants performance and may vary not only over the surface of the porous structure but through the depth of the porous structure. The thickness of the porous metal structure may also be modified to establish a thickness profile that optimizes mechanical and biological requirements of the implants performance. Acetabular cup embodiments of the invention are described. Various methods of manufacturing implants having directionally controlled pore characteristics are described.
