An apparatus for measuring thermomechanical properties of a photo-sensitive material sample during exposure of the sample material to a light source includes a sample holder having a sample support positionable in a sample holding area of the sample holder for holding the photo-sensitive material sample, a probe disposable relative to the sample support for measuring the thermomechanical properties of the photo-sensitive material sample, a temperature control unit having a cavity for receiving the sample holder and for maintaining the sample holder within a selectively-controlled temperature range, and an illuminating assembly operatively arranged for directing a light signal onto the sample holder for illuminating the photo-sensitive material held on the sample holder.

A method for fabricating an article, comprising the steps of grasping an outer surface of a first substrate with a first holder, whereby the outer surface of the first substrate is held to an inner surface of the first holder; grasping an outer surface of a second substrate with a second holder, whereby the outer surface of the second substrate is held to an inner surface of the second holder; arranging the inner surfaces of the first and second holders to face one another in a selected angular relationship; disposing an adherent on one or more surfaces selected from an inner surface of the first substrate and an inner of the second substrate; moving the first and second holders toward each other such that the inner surfaces of the first and second substrates contact the adherent; and at least partially curing the adherent while the inner surfaces of the first and second holders are in the selected angular relationship to form a multilayer article, wherein after removal of the first and second holders the at least partially cured adherent maintains the multilayer article in a posture at which the multilayer article was held by the first and second holders; and a system comprising a multilayer article that comprises a substrate and a layer of at least partially cured adherent adhered to the substrate, wherein the memory cell has surface flatness and transmission flatness values of about 0.05 to about 0.25 waves/cm, and wherein the force exerted by the adherent on the substrate maintains the flatness.

Method for fabricating a multilayer optical article

Applicants have discovered that the speed of fiber manufacture can be substantially increased by employing a two-step curing process in which the fiber is drawn, coated and exposed to ultraviolet light on-line at high line speeds to effect a partial cure of the coating. After further cooling, the partially cured coating is fully cured by an on-reel exposure to ultraviolet light. The on-reel exposure can take place on the draw tower take-up reel as it is filing with fiber or it can take place off-line after the take-up reel has been filled and removed from the line. The on-reel exposure advantageously takes place either during filling the take-up reel, or during emptying the reel, so that each layer of fiber on the reel is exposed equally to the ultraviolet light. This method of UV illumination improves the energy efficiency in the second exposure by at least a factor of 10 to as much as a factor of 1000. The fiber primary coating pullout strength and mechanical modulus are enhanced.
