According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, an industrial facility is provided comprising a tag layout and at least one ingress/egress zone. The tag layout comprises at least one double row of tags. The ingress/egress zone is located outside of an area of the vehicle travel plane occupied by the aisle path and is bounded in its entirety by the double row of tags, by two or more double rows of tags, by a combination of one or more double rows of tags and one more selected facility boundaries, or by combinations thereof. The double row of tags is arranged in an n×m matrix that is configured for successive detection of the inner and outer rows of tags that is dependent on the point-of-origin of a sensor transit path across the double row of tags. Additional embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

Tag layout for industrial vehicle operation

An industrial vehicle comprising a tag reader, a reader module, and a diagnostic tag, wherein the diagnostic tag is coupled to the industrial truck within a read range of the tag reader. The reader module and the tag reader cooperate to identify the diagnostic tag and individual tags of a tag layout and the reader module discriminates between the individual tags of the tag layout and the diagnostic tag and the individual tags of the tag layout, correlates an identified individual tag of the tag layout with tag data, correlates an identified diagnostic tag with operation of the tag reader, and generates a missing tag signal if the diagnostic tag is not identified or the operation of the tag reader is not within specified operating parameters.

Tag reader with diagnostic tag and an industrial vehicle incorporating the same

According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, an industrial vehicle is provided comprising industrial vehicle hardware, tag reader, reader module, user interface, and vehicle controller. The tag reader and reader module cooperate to identify individual sequenced tags along an aisle path of a tag layout in accordance with a sequence list accessible to the reader module. The reader module compares a succession of sequenced tags with at least a portion of the accessible sequence list to determine if the succession of sequenced tags is in sequence along the aisle path in accordance with the sequence list and generates a missing tag signal for a malfunctioning sequenced tag when the comparison of the succession of sequenced tags with the sequence list indicates a sequence irregularity in the plurality of sequenced tags. The reader module then correlates vehicle functionality with the malfunctioning sequenced tag when a missing tag signal is generated.

According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, an industrial vehicle is provided comprising industrial vehicle hardware, a user interface, tag reader, reader module, and vehicle controller. The tag reader and the reader module cooperate to identify individual tags of a tag layout comprising a plurality of zone identification tags and a plurality of zone tags. Each zone identification tag occupies a position in the tag layout that corresponds to a unique set of zone tags. Each unique set of zone tags comprises a plurality of zone tags. The reader module discriminates between the plurality of zone identification tags and the plurality of zone tags identified in the tag layout, correlates an identified zone identification tag with a unique set of zone tags, and correlates vehicle functionality with an identified zone tag within the unique set of zone tags, tag-dependent positional data derived from the identified zone tag, or both.

A vehicle is provided comprising: a main body; a plurality of wheels coupled to the main body; a traction motor associated with the main body and coupled to at least one of the wheels for driving the one wheel; control apparatus coupled to the traction motor and generating a motor drive signal to the traction motor; a first sensor for generating a velocity signal indicative of a velocity of the driven wheel; and a further sensor for sensing an acceleration of the main body and generating a vehicle acceleration signal. The control apparatus determining a measured velocity of the driven wheel from the first sensor speed signal, calculating a velocity of the vehicle using the vehicle acceleration signal and comparing the measured velocity of the driven wheel to the calculated velocity of the vehicle to determine wheel slip status.

Slip control for a materials handling vehicle

A vehicle is provided comprising: a main body; a plurality of wheels coupled to the main body; a traction motor associated with the main body and coupled to at least one of the wheels for driving the one wheel; control apparatus coupled to the traction motor and generating a motor drive signal to the traction motor; and a first sensor for generating a speed signal indicative of a speed of the driven wheel. The control apparatus may calculate acceleration of the one wheel using changes in the speed signal over time and calculate an acceleration of the vehicle using torque applied by the traction motor and a mass of the vehicle.

A computer controlled braking system utilizes gross vehicle weight of a materials handling vehicle and maximum allowable vehicle speeds to calculate braking force in response to a service brake request. For vehicles equipped with a caster brake, the calculated braking force is proportionally distributed between a drive brake and the caster brake. The drive brake includes a mechanical brake and motor braking which is performed by a traction motor. The drive brake force is divided between the mechanical brake and the motor braking so that the motor provides as much braking as possible to reduce wear on the mechanical brake and also to conserve battery power. For vehicles equipped with a caster brake, the caster brake portion of the calculated braking force is determined as a programmable percentage of the total braking force and can differ based on travel direction. The caster brake portion is clipped and reverts to the drive brake if it is below a minimum; and, if the calculated caster brake force is greater than a maximum, the caster brake force in excess of the maximum is clipped and reverts to the drive brake. A maximum caster brake current can be set to accommodate different brake hardware. A user of the vehicle can select adjustments to the calculated drive brake force and, if provided, can also select independent adjustments to the calculated caster brake force. If the vehicle has not substantially stopped within a given period of time after having its speed reduced to a low speed, the mechanical drive brake is fully applied.

Intelligent braking system for materials handling vehicles

A variable braking force electric brake for materials handling vehicles, such as fork lift trucks, utilizes two sets of springs to urge brake pads against a rotor of a disc brake. The first set of springs provide a first level of braking force, typically one-third of the total braking force. The second set of springs provide a second level of braking force, typically two-thirds of the total. A pair of electromagnetic elements act on armatures placed between the springs and a non-magnetic brake pad support plate to selectively permit either the first set of springs alone to provide braking, the second set of springs alone, or both sets together. Initially, the current to the electromagnetic elements is strong, to insure that the associated armature is pulled toward the electromagnet, and afterwards, the current is reduced to minimize heating and power requirements. The space or gap between the electromagnets and the armatures may be ascertained by means of a feeler gauge, or be examining a plunger, the end of which extends through the outer housing of the brake. The gap is determined by a set of three adjusting screws placed around the periphery of the brake housing.
