A control circuit is to monitor a parameter indicative of a tissue response associated with a first firing, assess the tissue response based on the parameter, and adjust an operational parameter associated with a second firing based on the tissue response during the first firing.

The drive train comprises a motor and a shaft actuatable by the motor to actuate a function of an end effector. The control circuit is coupled to the motor, wherein the control circuit is configured to determine a relative excess capacity of the drive train, compare the relative excess capacity to a predetermined shifting threshold, and increase the speed of the motor based on the relative excess capacity exceeding the predetermined shifting threshold.

The firing motor is configured to drive a firing member between an unfired position and a fired position. Disclosed is a method of adapting energy modality due to a short circuit or tissue type grasped in the jaws of an end effector of a surgical instrument and a system with a control circuit configured to execute the method. The method includes determining a first and second electrode of an array of segmented electrodes are shorted to each other, blending monopolar and bipolar RF energy to the array of segmented electrodes, and determining that the first and second electrodes remain shorted after the blending step. Additionally, or alternatively, the method may include determining that the first and second electrodes are no longer shorted after the blending step, sensing an electrical parameter of tissue grasped within jaws of the end effector, and determining an energy sealing and cutting procedure based on the sensed electrical parameter of the tissue.

A surgical instrument system comprising a motor system and a control circuit is disclosed. The motor system comprises a motor and a drive train coupleable to the motor and configured to actuate a firing member through a staple firing stroke. The control circuit is coupled to the motor, wherein, during the staple firing stroke, the control circuit is configured to monitor current draw of the motor and initiate an oscillating impact signal sequence to the motor based on the monitored current draw of the motor. The oscillating impact signal comprises a pulse amplitude selected based on the monitored current draw and a pulse width based on the monitored current draw.

The projections define a localized tissue-facing surface area. A localized valley is defined on the deck between the projections. The area of the localized valley area is greater than the localized tissue-facing area.

A staple cartridge comprising a cartridge body including a deck and projections extending from the deck is disclosed. When used with a surgical stapling instrument, the deck of the staple cartridge can be compressed against patient tissue before the staples contained in the staple cartridge are ejected. The projections are engaged with the patient tissue and hold the patient tissue in place. The staple cartridge further comprises an electrical trace defined on the deck that extends between at least two of the projections. The electrical trace is part of a sensor system that detects properties of the patient tissue positioned against the projections.

A method for authenticating the compatibility of a staple cartridge with a surgical instrument is disclosed.
